Create a +5 mm box around selection

Is there any way to add a square box around my current selection?

I use coreldraw X8 together with Winplot to cut vinyl logos and texts on a Summa plotter and it works great - except I really miss the way I can add those boxes around my selection in Signlab. It's really helpful for stripping the excess film and getting straight edges which helps installing the texts and logos without too much fuss.

I know I can shift click the box tool and it draws a square around my selection, but I need it to make the box 5mm larger than my selection all the way around without having to do it manually.

I see no default way of doing it, so maybe it is can be done via a macro?

NB: I posted this at the coreldraw subreddit aswell and was encouraged to ask the knowledgeable folks on this forum

  • However, I would VERY much like to know if there is a way to add the macro as a button to my toolbar somewhere or assign a shortcut to it. Right now I have to open the macro window every time I start Corel

You will need to become familiar with some of CorelDRAW's workspace customization tools to do that. Here's a video where I right-click on the subroutine in the Macro Manager and use the "Assign Keyboard Shortcut" option there as a shortcut to get to Options>Workspace>Customization>Commands and change the settings for that particular Command:

    VIDEO: add_rectangle_and_workspace_customization.

There, I assign a keyboard shortcut (I steal the one that is the default shortcut for the Spiral tool). I also assign an icon to that Command, then drag to add it to a toolbar.

An icon isn't necessary. The button on the toolbar can be set to show just the caption for the Command.

Here's a link to a .ZIP file with the .GMS file that contains the code I showed in the thread to which I linked upthread:

    add_rectangle.zip.
