Working with thousands of objects, which happen to be rhinestones, the document will not close when the x box it clicked.
Along with this problem, the Object Properties dialog totally goes bonkers, opening some sub trees, and the scrolling action goes haywire.
Note: THOUSANDS of objects, as in rhinestone fills.
This machine has plenty or ram, plenty of cpu.
Appears that this is not a de-facto failure to close. It is a much-delayed closing, likely due to the number of objects.
I suggest that the UI provide some indication that a close (or save) is in progress, rather than appearing that the UI is ready to proceed with following steps.

There is a video of non-close
Video of problem
Thanks for sharing the video, it was helpful. It appears that you are not able to close the file because there is an export in process and it is not complete.
If you look at the status bar, there is an export icon beside the fill icon. Clicking on that icon will pop-up a progress indicator which shows you the status of the export. You are correct that there is a delay in closing the file and it is because of the fact that (in the video at least), you are in the process of exporting the file.
Not sure what is taking your export so long to complete and more information would be needed to better understand what is happening there.
It never completed. I ended up using Task Manager to kill the process.
Thanks for pointing out the export progress indicator.
