Photo fade out

Can I create a fade from a photo that will blend into the background? I want to get rid of the 'hard' lines on the outside edges of the photo and have the whole photo blend into the background. But, keeping the photo as visable as possible.
With the transparency tool i cannot reach the effect I am looking for, or am I not doing something right?
All help would be appreciated

    Corel PhotoPaint really can do it, simply choose the rectangular mask tool, you can change the corner radius and feather in the mask property bar , then apply it and you'll have round corners and blend borders.
