Object Clearance

I'm producing some work for a client which has a fairly tight tolerance on clearance between complex shaped line objects. Is there an efficient way for me to prevent objects falling within a specified distance from other objects?

The way I would do it normally would be to measure using on screen rulers or a dimension tool.

Andy :)

  • You can try to use Grid and snap to grid

    • Hello Andy; You may want to check out John's web site, I think he has a macro for that. ( http://www.gdgmacros.com )

      • you may activated snap to object, then create an object as ruler...

        • Thanks for all the replies. I think that the main problem is that each shape is non-uniform. so aligning to a grid wont work. I will take a look at the macros on GDG Macros. I think I've found one that may work so will investigate further :)

Thanks again! You guys ROCK! \m/

          • FYI, in X6 there's a new feature added for those with a Premium membership; Alignment guides.
Alignment guides will allow you to set a given "margin" and then you get a visual indication and snap when the object is moved into the right position. Easy to use and very powerful.
Could probably be worth looking at.

            • For irregular objects, you could possibly apply an outside contour of half your minimum separation distance and then use the nudge keys to finely adjust the position the objects so the contours just touch:

The default nudges are rather coarse for this, but can be set much finer at tools > options > document > rulers.

You can only apply contours to one object at a time, so it might be useful to make a macro that creates the required contour for all or selected objects.

Effects > Clear Contour will remove contours from all selected objects when you have them in position.

              • Cheers Harry, that's a good idea.

                Thank you!
