OS Fonts affected by Font Navigator

My problem is Font Navigator keeps a certain number of Fonts "installed" (at hand).
I am of the understanding this is a way of lightening the load...having less Fonts installed at any one time.

When I open Font Navigator and install a new Font in my available Fonts list, a Font is removed/replaced.
I am unsure of how the choice is made, I assume its the oldest installed Font in the list, I don't know.
But a Font will disappear from my drop-down list of available Fonts (in Coreldraw).

This would be annoying if it wasn't for the the feature of Corel temporarily using necessary Fonts when opening a Document.

However, I am finding that Fonts in other programs are changing as a result.
For example, browser fonts switch to unacceptable choices.
Fonts used in my Email program are different, and unacceptable.
The font I am seeing right now, as i type this, is an Arial Black Bold type. lol

Even Fonts in the Coreldraw workspace change.
Some things become very hard to see, because some fonts are just too small or fancy.
The Corel Splash/Welcome screen has a very small, serifed Roman style font now.

In fact, just the act of opening Font Navigator when another program is running,
will change certain Fonts in that program.
I always close down everything before I use Font Nav.

I am guessing that Font Navigator is removing/replacing original OS installed Fonts. Why?
I have tried to put Fonts back, but without knowing exactly what Fonts are supposed to be there...
I can increase the number of allowed Fonts in my Font Navigator list, but this still doesn't put back anything already replaced.
I don't know what OS fonts have been changed.

Some advice?

  • and, how exactly can I increase the number of installed Fonts?
I can't seem to find this in the help files of Font Nav.

No, FontNavigator just create a shortcut to the font. The original font file remain on the folder

You have to columns of fonts, the lesft side is all the font that FontNav found on our computer, the right side are the installed fonts (under Window/Fonts). If you install a font, the font is on both sides. When you uninstall a font, it's only on the left side.

That sound a Windows conflict. Make sure that you have set Font Navigator to search all your fonts. Sometimes it's good to update the list (File/Find fonts)

FontNavigator can't remove or replace system fonts. Only can do it with some fonts that are used by the system (Arial, SegoeUI, Tahoma, Verdana) but FontNavigator don't remove a font by itself. If those fonts were desactivaded, maybe there was a conflict (the same font could be under different folders) or the same font is present on different file formats at teh same time (it could be OpenType, trueType, or Type 1) but you can easily reinstall it. For example, if you have installed Arial Black truetype and install Arial Black opentype, the same font is duplicated on the System, then Windows will disable it.

      • wrong. Font Nav can remove system fonts.
I have seen it done and had to repair windows to reinstall the default font list.

I already understand how to use Font Nav.
        Search Fonts.
Get a list of Fonts. (Font Catalog)
See a list of Installed Fonts. (238 currently installed)

        I get that.
Now, let me explain my problem once again.

Open Coreldraw...see a list of available Fonts.
        142 fonts in the list.

If I open Font nav and install a new font...
it will appear in my Coreldraw Font list,
but one font (a different font) will disappear.

At certain times, a font may disappear that is used in Mozilla Thunderbird,
or in Mozilla Firefeox, or in Google Chrome, or in the Splash screen of Coreldraw,
or somewhere else on my computer.

This problem relates directly to when I open Font Nav and install or uninstall a font.

I remember when I installed Corel, that I was able to set the limit of available fonts
and I remember an explanation of how a maximum font number is maintained.

I'd like to know how to increase that number.
And why fonts are being changed in places other than in my artwork.

System fonts can't be removed. Maybe you're talking about "fonts used on the system", which is different. For example, Arial is a font used by Windows, but it's not a system font. You can remove it, then it will replaced by other font, and some pages will looks different (including the CorelDRAW splash screen or Google).

The amount of fotns may not match because some fonts are gouped as families or included on other group. For example, if you have Arial Opentype and Arial Black Opentype, both will be on the same group, but if you have Arial Black truetype it will be a different group. And also, you could have both Arial Black opentype and truetype installed at the same time

According your description, when you open FontNavigator the list of available fonts on Windows changes.  That could because the program add some temporary font or bacause it could be a conflict on some fonts.

The advice of FontManager is to maintan less than 400 installed fonts for improve system performance. Less fonts, more speed, more stability and more available memory. Btw, Windows allows more fonts, although the standard llimit of Windows is set on 720 fonts you could install more than this. The problem is how to manage it, since sometimes Windows can't manage a large amount of fonts. For example, the same font could be installed twice (or more), so if you uninstall the font and restart, the font appears again as installed. therically is not possible, but is a frequent issue. On some computers I uninstall all fonts (yes, all), and after restart some font appears again, and I need to repeat the process 4 or 5 times in order to uninstall all fonts, then install the basic fonts (Arial, SegoeUI, Tahoma, Verdana, etc). So, there's no "maximum" number of fonts, but the best advice is to use as less as possible. remember that FontNavigator allows you to install "groups" of fonts. For example, if you work on a monthly magazine, you can install all the fonts you need under one group, then uninstall the entire group after finish.

Fonts are managed by the operating system. All changes you made will be applied on the entire system. If you use CorelDRAW X8 you can use fonts without install it, and only inside CorelDRAW, but on previous versions, all fonts you install or uninstall are applied to the entire system

      • Hello airdave; Windows has a DIR. called Fonts in it when you install Windows. It is something like Windows\font in the fonts folder there are about 250 fonts that You can use. The more fonts that are in that folder the longer Windows takes to look at them. There are fonts in there that you will never use, BUT there are fonts there that Windows needs as system fonts that other programs use. With X6 you have Bitstream Font Navigator and you can add fonts to it that, Corel will use if you want. X8 Has Corel Font Navigator which To Me is Worth the cost of the program by itself.

        George
PS: I Hope this has Helped.

        • I have always hated the included Font Navigators.
But I can't really afford to switch to X8 right now.

To be honest, I have been quite happy with X6 so far.
Least amount of problems I have had with Corel over the last 20 years.
And when you consider the various issues with each version of Corel,
it makes me hesitant to switch again! lol

I am also very unfamiliar with what X8 has to offer.
So maybe I need to study that first.
