At last, we now can set the color/contrast of the desktop and not be so blinded by the abundance of white.....
Thank you, Corel, for this nice gift.
Pretty damn cute.

Not.
Do I even want to install this update?
MikeWe said: Well, suku, it is a new feature isn't it? Only premie members get new features during a release cycle. If this wasn't so pathetic it really would be funny.

Mr Mike, talk to me chief. What part of the reg do I edit to change the desktop color?
Here's the standard disclaimer...edit the registry can have unintended consequences...do so at your own risk...
Start regedit.exe
You should probably back-up the Registry before going any further.
The location is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Corel\CorelDRAW\17.0\Draw\Application Preferences\WindowScheme
Likely you could just do a search in the registry for:
PageMatColor
The color gray you see in my post above is the number: 14277081
Here's a way you can see the number needed for whatever color you want.
There is also a key named WindowBorderColor. Write down or copy the number that is there to a Notepad instance.
Have CD open as well. Go to the Global Options section. You can change the title bar color to what you would like the PageMatColor to be. Save the CD Options.
Now switch back the regedit. Press F5 to refresh the display (it actually should auto-refresh upon regaining focus). Now double-click the WindowBorderColor key. Copy the number. Cancel. Double-click the PageMatColor key. Paste the number in its value box. Click OK.
Now double-click on the WindowBorderColor key. Copy/Paste the former WindowBorderColor value back into the value box that you copied to Notepad.
Save. Exit and restart CD.
Again, edit the registry at your own risk...
Take care, Mike
Hi Mike
You are braver than we are I would never publish the registry stuff we do in case someone screwed up disclaimer or not the questions would be never ending.
Corel need to recognize they are one of the worst for releasing buggy software and just fix it, they lose users because of it would anyone become premium users to get what should be their to start with.
back up the registry to flash or cd
You have me thinking maybe we should release registry hacks and vba work arounds we have done as a fix it kit.
Ross Blair
@Ross--if I weren't so lazy I would have wrote a small executable. It would have been easier if I took the time to figure out what the numbers correspond to. Then I could have just made people a .reg file. Open it in Notepad, change the value, save it and double-click the .reg file and its done.
If I cared enough, I could easily write a small utility with all the settings that can be changed whether they were in the Options dialog or not. Combing through the registry to figure out all of them would be tedious, though.
A couple people actually did this for Xara products. Xara had settings they were not willing to put in the Options dialog. Been using this utility for years to make certain customizations in XDP.
Edit to add...
If they hadn't pissed me off I wouldn't have posted the reg key stuff. If I find other little pieces of crap, I might just write a config utility...
I also had to laugh at this one for premies only:
Something every other vector editing software has been able to do for, well, about forever. But hey, Corel can use it as a premie only update to justify charging more for something that is a standard feature elsewhere. For instance, I have used Xara Designer Pro for sometime. I cannot remember seeing this hide an object feature and saying, Wow! That's innovative!.
How much is premie membership again?
Ah well. Maybe we less fortunate (i.e., the unwilling to spend more for standard features) will be able to obtain such an advancement in UI design and functionality with X8.
Mike
For some reason Corel is like the sore I can't leave alone still use it for a lot of little things because it is fast and easy. I suppose I should just accept they will never reach their full potential.
I am a premium member only because I joined just in time to get the special price for X7 when first released We don't use X7 at all in production it is just too flaky I know others do, good for them.
I see they fixed the color problem of colors changing when converting multiple text item to curves lets see 6 months to return to normal we hacked the registry to get what we wanted for backgrounds back in x5. Keep complaining to corel to fix the program though. we have about 14 items we see as bugs we don't list them or waste time with corel because we don't have time to go back an forth.
I certain some one will say, gee boss can I spend $ 99 so I can hide items quark and x6 are doing 40 % adobe the rest
Corel has become an accessory for us rather than a reliable platform.
If I were not already a Premium member I too would be VERY upset. It should be a standard feature. The super light background in Photo-Paint X7 is just unacceptable. I reverted to using PPX6 because of it.
But since I am a Premie, I am going to enjoy not having to wear sunglasses!

Same registry hack applies to PhotoPaint, just a slightly different location.
Do note on either location (for either application), the key is not present until such time as one tries to use the premie feature. Then CD or PP adds the key, which can then be modified.
The short of it? I'm not wearing sunglasses anymore in CD or PP, either.
Right when Adobe went with subscription only model, people started saying that Corel was different. I said Corel must be dying to follow that same model. It's just business after all. Now we get to see the truth of my words. Corel can't force it on you like Adobe, so it's trying to influence you to subscribe. In this case, it's just pathetic how they chose to do it. They picked a couple of features that are extremely old news on competing products, and made them only available to subscription users. I don't think consumers view the subscription in the same way that Corel imagines they do. The more Corel does nonsense like this, the more even it's fans will dislike and distrust. It's really unfortunate. People were begging for the ability to change the brightness of the interface. Corel responds by dangling it like a carrot on a string.
I am not really upset about the whole premie scheme that Corel uses. Why? Because they have people willing to lay out $100 bucks a year to be beta testers. It's brilliant, really. By the time we mere mortals get the changes, maybe the bugs in those features get worked out.
Under the former scheme, I wouldn't see those features until a new release anyway.
While it would be classified as still playing catch-up, why don't they actually give premie users something of value like real paragraph and character styles? PDF/X-4 output? I could list a few dozen things under the "catch-up" category, let alone some actual new things. These things would at least provide a value-added deal for those willing to spend the extra money. Better than putting lipstick on a pig, so to speak, and then calling it a premium feature.
