Google Drive "file open elsewhere"

I recently switched from Dropbox to Google Drive and after saving a file, for about 10-20 minutes after I can't save the file again. I get an error that says the file is open elsewhere and needs to close.

I have searched the internet for an answer and can't find any. Do I have to abandon google drive and find another option?

Does anyone have a fix?

Google drive gives this message when you try to save the file it's saving in the background. Let the process complete and all should be OK

I figured that was what it was, but it can take up to 20 minutes or more sometimes and I still get the error. I have very fast internet (90mbps down and 10 up) so I just don't see why it should take that long

I heard one guy on a chat forum changed the default proxy setting in google drives settings of "Automatically detect proxy settings to "Direct connection," and got a nice speed increase.

I found a similar thread and when I changed it there was a significant increase from about an hour, down to the 20 minutes. lol

I have been struggling with the same problem for months. Right now I have the problem with a file that was synched to Google Drive 13 hours ago, but when I open it, it says:

"The file you are opening is currently in use. To save your work, you may need to save the file with a new name (File > Save As)".

I have checked everywhere, and the file is definitely NOT in use anywhere.

What the heck is going on?
