I am working in CorelDraw 10 and I have to send lots of files to printers and other designers that work in the Adobe world (CreativeSuites Illustrator and InDesign). I have Illustrator 7 and have finally figured out a setup that works for both but am running into problems with sending and receiving files that aren't saved low enough from the CS or they need higher versions.
My questions is does anyone recommend a higher version of CorelDRAW and/or a higher version of Illustrator. (without breaking the bank!)
The art I work with can be anything from simple pages of icons to layouts of 16 month calendar spreads and everything in-between.
Thanks!
Hi,I would upgrade to CorelDRAW X4.

Thanks for your advice. I'll do some research and upgrade!
amy3 said: thanks... I was refering to the writing of the PDF- Adobe Acrobat and just read that with X4 it has Adobe Acrobat 8. Since the other designer is using CS3 .
amy3 said: Since the other designer is using CS3 I'm sure her version of Acrobat is much more up to date than the version I have that came with Corel 10 (Acrobat 4).
amy3 said:Tiffs usually work best for me. The transparency option works great with tiffs too. Most of the files like I said are saved as AI files.
amy3 said:so here is one more question...should or can I upgrade (free) my Adobe Acrobat 4 in the meantime while I wait to get X4...if so, to what version?
I create many many pdfs... I have been trying to open a pdf in corel or Illustrator from the other designer (the one using CS3 - and file corrupt) and thought that maybe I should update my Acrobat 4 to whatever the highest free upgrade is for working in CorelDRAW 10. My X4 upgrade probably won't happen right away. Just trying to find a fix for an immediate problem! I need the art to be vector. It's hard because I'm not there saving the file that is being sent to me!!! - wish I was though!!!

They are saving it from InDesign on a MAC. I've asked her to save it back to AI 7 but she said the only options are versions 8 and 3. (3 didn't work...it filled in all open spaces with black!) I just asked her to save it from Illustrator CS3 instead of ID like you recommended. I think she is getting frustrated with the incompatibility issue! It's a major licensing company for us so it's pretty important that we get this figured out!! (Like you said before...I need to upgrade to X4!!!) - looks like the sooner the better.
I'll let you know if she sends the file and if it works....keeping my fingers crossed!
thanks again!
InDesign isn't compatible with anything other than itself. it should never be used as an originating platform for design that is intended to go to anything back stream. instead AI, PSD, JPEG, PDF etc files go to InDesign, then from there the file goes to print. i know graphics houses that are ID centered and all final output is exported as PDF to press. they panic at receiving a Quark file and never send .indd files to printers either. this is why the client shouldn't have only an ID file of their graphics. ID is specialized, intended for final destination before press, not the format for individual graphics files and graphic elements that will be used for needed interoperability with other software. even in the Adobe world that isn't recommended. what you're going to need is a copy of InDesign, but this only allows you to work within the ID environment or the client needs to provide you with an originating AI file before it was placed in an InDesign document. this sounds like a classic assumption that anything Adobe should just work, not realizing that .indd files make .cdr files look like a compatibility cake walk. i just read the ID CS3 export options on the Adobe site and Illustrator is not listed as an option.
if they can get ID to save to AI 8, with everything intact then a Corel upgrade is going to be needed. just make sure the client previews the export in Illustrator on their end to make sure it looks fine, before sending to you. Mac users can be completely mindless in these areas, i know, i'm one of them!
Now when you will get X4, talk to the designer via telephone as you said, and ask her to:
Now you open your new CorelDRAW X4 and it should open just fine.
