I love this topic!
It might be the fundamental topic for computer artists/ illustrators. If we produce art (images made for our own satisfaction) on the computer, as opposed to illustrations (images for a client with specific requirements... my own definition) how can they be best exported for display? Or even, can they be displayed as art and recognized as art by the public?
It reminds me a little of the history of impressionism... a response to the invention of photography. The big question in the art world at that time was whether or not photography would be the end of professional artwork. Of course it just changed the way artists viewed their work and changed art in general (for the better, in my opinion).
When illustration work first started being done on computers, a doctor friend (and client) asked if digital art would end my career as a medical illustrator because, as he stated, "anyone could now produce medical art".
I replied that a computer was just a fancy pencil. The trick is not what you draw with, it's knowing what to draw.

Hi, Ted.How I have understood, - you compare vector drawing with gravure-art?
You correctly have paid attention on printmaker - idea in vector work.
Rob you without doubts well have distinguished a work of art from an illustration (in ващем own definition). Though in it(him) also there are often examples, when even the advertising illustration is the recognized object of art (Alfons Mucha for example)... But the question here concerns not so much to distinction of "high" and "low" art, and to that, - who and as imagines an opportunity of "high" art in a vector.
