Does anyone know how to avoid this warning popping up when I import certain CorelDraw files into another CorelDraw document?
Open the file and copy and paste the content should work.
Unfortunately that's not an option David.
Ok if you're up to it we can do a test or two. If I used styles I'd already have an answer to this but we used to do about a dozen newsletters and multiple small ad booklets a month years ago and that was before styles were a thing in Draw. That was just after the internal combustion engine was invented.
Let's not screw up the process so, you may want to open one of you regular template files and save as a CorelDRAW template in a safe place on your local machine just for testing. It will cave with a CDT extension, filenameXXX.cdt, when you open them you're required to use save as to save your edits as a CDR file. Draw templates save all you created content as if it's a CDR file but they also allow you to save certain application and document defaults settings so when you open a template it eliminates the need for setting those particular defaults again, this will function even if you are using Draw in a factory installed configuration or a custom configuration.
Now before I make any recommendations about the 850 CDR files that you import, I need to know a bit about their content compared to your template.
Does the template share content that is contained in the imported CDR file?
What I mean is this, is the content from the imported file simply added to the template in its entirety?
Do you add some of the content of the imported file to the template but not others?
Do the CDR files that you import share the same page size and orientation as the template file?
Do you use embedded fonts in your templates?
Do you use embedded fonts in those imported 850 CDR files?
Hi David, some answers for you.
Does the template share content that is contained in the imported CDR file? No
What I mean is this, is the content from the imported file simply added to the template in its entirety? Yes
Do you add some of the content of the imported file to the template but not others? No
Do the CDR files that you import share the same page size and orientation as the template file? Not all, some do, some older ones don't
Do you use embedded fonts in your templates? All my .cdr files are saved with embedded fonts
Do you use embedded fonts in those imported 850 CDR files? Yes.
Hope that's covered everything
I've attached some examples for your info. These consist of our '4 page template' (our 'master .cdr file) and some sample adverts that we would typically import into the 4 page template file. I've also included a saved .cdr file called 9-12 which is completed '4 page template'.
SAMPLE FILES
Thanks as ever for your help.
Cool, I was going to go to the sports club for some play with hand loads and some bird photography but we're heading to single digit temperatures so NOT!
I'll give it and the symbols some play the next couple days.
I downloaded your files. I can open them but with the embedded fonts I have to convert the original files to curves to move from one document to another. Editing file with embedded fonts has issues unless you have the exact same fonts installed on the editing system as the creation system. Embedding fonts can cause issues even if you have the fonts installed on the editing system depending on the font.
I opened your template file and added 4 quarter page rectangles on the pages to make moving and centering the pasted objects easier.
If I saved that file as a template (CDT) file I could only open it when selecting open from the file menu and when the dialog popped up, I selected for editing, as a CDR file it just opened, so saving as a template had zero benefit.
Once I had the template file opened, I was unable to import any of the other provided CDR files.
Having my base file opened, (your template file with my rectangles) I simply opened the other files with the ads in them one by one, converted fonts to curves, grouped, copied and pasted into the base template file, some came in exactly where I wanted them. For the others I simply ungrouped the base rectangles, selected the pasted copy, then the objects for alignment, aligned and deleted the alignment rectangle.
The process once the base template was opened took about 20 to 35 seconds to open, convert to curves, copy, paste and align the copy into the base template for each new ad.
I'll past a link to download my files.
Here is your link download (graphictechnology.com)
Morning David,
It appears you have almost reproduced our work flow, obviously minus the turning to curves part and being able to import the files. I'm not sure what has been established, if anything?
Why did you add the rectangles? We just use 'snap to guides' to enable precise placing of the imported files.
Did you get any errors when attempting to import the files? I'm puzzled as to why they couldn't be imported. I've re-saved the individual ads to the same folder as before, all turned to curves, in case that helps with your import difficulties.
Completion of a 4 page 'template with all ads imported typically takes approx 3-4 minutes currently.
No errors it just sat there and spun for away too long. I hate snapping for most of my files but in you case it would work easier.
Now that I've had a night to sleep on the workflow I'll diddle with some stuff. I have issues with the speed, not that on my system its slow but for the amount of file content there's something in the template combined with the ad files that's slogging the application.
Why do you embedd fonts?
Morning David (afternoon here in the UK!)
My system is currently awaiting a re-build and still manages the 3-4 minute completion time.
I'm not sure what 'snapping' is?
The fonts are only embedded as that's the default setting!. I'm all ears if you think not embedding will help at all. When we convert our 'templates' to PDF we turn all 'fonts to objects' anyway.
I used to do work with a company in Baltimore years ago that does nearly exactly what you do. My company did application support and IT for their entire process.
Today is Friday (married 49 years) and the morning is what we call date day. We do a bunch of stuff together and I'll get to play with your files this afternoon.
Let me ask a few questions.
How many graphic workstations creating files?
Do you have an IT support team?
I'm betting you have an overload of stuff piling up in your CDR files, I suspect this as your template is nothing and takes too long to load.
Congratulations, 49 years is quite a milestone. The template may have a few empty layers in it but there’s not a lot else going on. I’ll re- build it on Monday when I’m next in the office and see what happens. I’m the only creator of the advert files, one of my colleagues shares the pagination work with me. We both access the same files which are stored on our server.
Cool, we're back now from our date day, so it's grab a bite and play with this stuff. It's good that you have few file creators it makes resolving issues less problematic and once done plots a steady course for the future.
