Corel PHOTO-PAINT X5

I have some suggestions to Corel Photo-Paint X5. I done comparision with Adobe Photoshop CS3 because it's more popular(Gimp too Sad) than Corel productTongue Tied For those programs find a tutorial or brush isn't problem, find free tutorial for photopaint is impossible.

  1. More friendly interface. With some round shapes and changeable layout.
  2. Importing brushes from Photoshop and GIMP.
  3. More brushes options like in photoshop (e.g. on screenshots).
  4. More effects and more effects options (e.g. from ps on screenshots).
  5. Outline tool integrated with photopaint (used for outlining any shape).
  6. Glow effect - created special for adding glows to objects.
  7. New parameter for every brush/effect tool. This parameter is range of effect to shape of active object or on whole image.

This is all. I'll think about new suggestions.

  • Hi,

Gimp in my opinion is probably the most stupid bitmap/rster program ever. The only good thing with it is that its free. But that its free is probably also why its so bad. Well thats my personal opinion.

I agree that there isnt so many FREE Photo-Paint tutorials, in comparison to Photoshop. But this doesnt mean there is no tutorials. I agree though that it would be nice with more.

I dont agree at all that Photo-Paint have to few brushes. How many does one really need? When using a brush, any brush, you can use, and do use merge mode, opacity and other features. Take a serious look at the Brush settings docker in Photo-Paint, and the Artistic Media Docker. And also, take a look on the DVD or CD in the Box version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. There might be more brushes for you there.

About brushes. Yes, I like to have more to select from, but seriously you dont need so many brushes, you need the brushes you think suites your way of work. In a digital illustration you probaly dont use more than maybe 5 or 6 different brushes. Chalk, Camel Dry hair, Quick Doodler and so on.

    1. The Brush settings docker in Photo-Paint, and the Artistic Media Docker, are docker that hides a huge potential for those who dig into them. And the only whay to learn them is to use them, and explore the dockers.
    2. Glow effect - of course you can add glow effects. I wrote about it in this older post: http://community.coreldraw.com/forums/p/9192/36682.aspx#36682
    3. Some brushes from Photoshop can be imported, Gimp - why bother (sorry, I really dont like Gimp)
    4. Of course you can make the interface changeable as you put it. You can very easaly just drag apart and attach all the toolbars and dockers in Photo-Paint. You can customize it as you like it. You can also have them floating around like in Photoshop, if that is what you like. No problem, Just drag around . Experiment.
    5. You can add outline to any object (and text is also an object in Photo-Paint) Ctrl+M and P, right click Brushstrokes on mask, chose outside, middle or inside of omask/object.
    6. The Parameter for the Brush, again look at the Brush Settings docker and Artistic Media Docker

You can read this. It shows how you can use any photoshop brush in Corel PhotoPaint.
It works fine for me whenever I have to use brushes in my work.

    • I know how to make glow with using shadows but I think special tool is easier.

I think opening photoshops brushes is quickly than using program.

Yeah, but in comparision between Artistic Media + Brush settings and photoshop options, ps wins Sad

Sorry I dont understand what you mean.
You always have to start a program to reach the brushes ??

        1. Start the program
        2. Choose a tool, in this case the Brush tool.
        3. By default, when you install Photo-Paint,  the Brush settings and Artistic media docker is not "open"
So you go to the Tools>Docker and from there open the Dockers. Same in Photoshop. Other wise you would have tons of Dockers/palettes all around.

I mean importing brushes is faster than using ABRViever.

          • Hi parsival10 ,

I am with Stefan on this one - why do you need so many brushes? What do you do with PP/PS that you need so many brushes? People often brushes and/or effects, like they are collecting stamps or football cards....but in reality, do they need them? If you know what you are doing you can make any brush you like in PP. More to the point, you can make what you actually need.

            Best regards,
            Brian.

            • What is so difficult about adding a brush in PP? All I do when I need something specific is to create one from a masked object by creating a new "nib". A lot of Photoshop brushes present online are also available as PNGs too, so use those, not the photoshop native ones.

              • hi A,

For me, a nib is only part of a brush. One of the things I hope to see is th the ability to save and recall complete brushes, effect tools, and erasers.

I agree with Brian: most of the time we just need 5-10 tools with certain nibs.

My agony is in quickly accessing my favorite 5-10 tools... I would prefer to do this with hotkeys so that my mouse can stay in position on the art.
