4 up - Work and Turn Imposition?

I've noticed that there is only 8-up saddlestitch and perfect bound imposition available.

I normally work with a 4 up imposition where i have to do it manually...

Plate sizes ranges from 21.654" * 25.591" to 24" * 36".

Also the image should be on 2.25" from the right side of the plate and centered vertically. 0.25" space vertically between the center of the spread and registration marks 0.25" * 0.25" in size.

Sometimes I have to use third party software to achieve a perfect 4 up imposition when I have a document with more than 50 pages.

Is there any way I can add the 4 up imposition feature?

I've uploaded a file to show what I mean. Red Guidelines indicte bleed areas.

  • Hey Adrian,

We used to rip using Corel's Impositions layout prior to going to a full PDF workflow.  It is quite easy to set up your own imposition layouts based on your exact needs, and save them for future use without having to constantly do the manual setups.

    Attached are three files:
    1) 4pp Book Impo.cdr is a sample v14 cdr file using 16 pages but set as a 4 page book imposition per your original template.

    2) USLetter Book Impo x4pages.cly is impostion layout file (based on 22" x 26.5" sheet).  This file gets copied into C:\Documents and Settings\"usernamegoeshere"\Application Data\Corel\CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4\User Custom Data\Layouts folder.  This is based on winXP, but should be similar for other OS's.

    3) Screenshots.cdr with screenshots of the imposition windows for better clarity of the following instructions.

When you open the cdr, you will see 16 sample pages.  Your book can be as big or small as you need, just in multiples of 4.

    To output your file imposed:
    1) File PRINT
    2) choose your output printer and set your final sheet size (ie; 22" x26.5")
    3) select CURRENT DOCUMENT so all pages will be output
    4) click PRINT PREVIEW
    5) click the IMPOSITION TOOL
    6) open the dropdown window that shows as default As in document (Full Page).  This will list all of the default impositions and should show the cly file you copied earlier into this folder.
    7) select USLetter Book Impo x4pages in this dropdown.
    8) The impo will change to reflect a 4up layout.  If you want all pages to print as individual folding sheets (ie; p1-4 fold together, 5-8 fold together, etc) then you are ready to print.  If you want them nested so you can Saddle stitch the book after folding (ie; for a 16pp book you want 16-1, 2-15, 14-3, 4-13, etc) then change the number of pages per group to equal the number of pages in your book.  In this example, change 4 to 16.

You can set up similar impositons for different sheet sizes and layouts.  The + - buttons next to the "current imposition layout" dropdown are for saving & deleting your custom impositions.

Hopefully I haven't a) left out any steps and b) confused you even more.  Any questions just ask.

          • You're an absolute genius my friend...

It looks like it will function perfectly.

            Love the way it works.

I will have to get accustomed to this... thanks you so much.

I'm sure this will save me lots of time now.

            Thanks again....

Ps. I've noticed that I will have to manually bleed my pages before i do this? Am i correct?

Thanks again. Will keep you posted.

            • Hey Adrian,

Glad it's going to work for you.  It's not that hard and once you start working with it you should find things a bit easier.  Like I said, we used to RIP directly from corel to our Heidelberg DI74, so you shouldn't have too many problems.

As for bleed, if your artwork is designed with bleed and placed on the page, then there shouldn't be any problems.  If I understand you correctly, your base page size in the corel document should be equal to your single page trim size.  So for an 8.5x11 sheet with say 1/8" bleed (just using approximates as we use metric here in Oz), your bleed would just need to extend off the page size by 1/8".  Using a metric example (so I can give you exact numbers), an A4 book (210mm x 297mm), page size for the design is set at 210mm x 297, and artwork is laid out with a minimum of 2mm bleed, so design extends out to 214mm x 301mm.  Then when you print-imposed to the platesetter, the trimmed size yeilds 297mm x 420mm with artwork occupying 301mm x 424mm.   Clear as mud?

Again, if you have trouble, just let me know and I'll see if we can work it out.

              *cheers*
