I need to draw a 3D (style) football. I've seen pictures on the web so I know it can be done.
The white segments are hexagons and the black are pentagons as in the attached picture. Of course, these won't match up correctly whilst lying flat as a football is round. How do I create the illusion of this? And the shading etc?
Thanks in advance for ANY help! I've no idea where to start!

Hi Samantha,
I don't believe this, I made a quick file to show you one way you could go about it and I somehow read your message without looking at your image. How I missed that huge image I will never know! Anyway, you can follow my file but instead of the rectangles I use, use pentagons instead. To draw a pentagonal shape use the Polygon tool (below the Ellipse tool in the toolbox) and sets its number of sides to 5 on the Property Bar. I drew one for you as an example.
Please refer to my file attachment. I made it in X5 and saved to an X4 file, I hope you can open it ok.
Best regards,Brian.
p.s. I am a light user of CorelDraw, so a more regular user may come in and offer a much better technique. Having not looked at your image first, I did not add the shadow details either, but they are very simple to create.
Just reading your post again, I realise the shapes are both pentagons and hexagons. You use the Polygon tool to create both; choose 5 sides and 6 sides respectufully for each type. In my sample file I left spaces between shapes, in your case you can use real shapes for the white areas, with black outlines.
I will wait for an expert to step in, if they don't I will have a go for you.
STEPS:
1st. Draw the hexagonal and pentagonal figures, side by side (4 or 5 rows are sufficient).2nd. Construct a circle over them. Select the circle and apply Lenses (Effect / Lens • Shortcut Alt + F3)3rd. When the docker opens, select "Fish Eye" / "Frozen" > ApplyNote: "Rate" determines how much you want to bend (more or less than 100%).4th. Separate figures and apply shading as desired to simulate "volume".

Hi Silvio,
have you tried this football at all? It is a real pain in the .......! The problem is not using lenses or shading, it is trying to mesh the 5 sided shapes into the 6 sided shapes. This is the closest I have come so far (please note I only just started the shading, but I am not happy with the shapes yet, so I didn't correct the shading and finish it off.
