When using Corel X5 I have had a lot of problems using linked images.
I have tried saving the suspect files (which is every one I work on) as X4 and opened it in X4 to test. All of the files output in a matter of minutes. If I then open the same file in X5 it hangs again. This leads me to believe that it is X5 that is causing the problem.
I am running Windows 7 on a 32 bit system with 3.00 Gb of Ram and a Tb hard drive.

That needs to be checked out in depth and you need to zip all the files and put them on a server where they can be accessed. If you don't have access to a server then use Drop Box. You will need to keep it under 2GB to do that.

As an X4 file this opened in 19.5 seconds. As an X5 file it took 30.8 seconds. Now that is for a one page file. Imagine the time it takes for a 44 page one.
I think it is time you got a new computer if the file you sent me is taking 30 seconds to open. It's about 2 seconds here on the first attempt and 1.5 seconds on the second.
X5 will take a bit longer on some things, that is a result of it being a more complex program. I'm not sure about what is covered by multi-threading and how that impacts this, it might make use of multiple cores that is hard to tell on a one page document. I'd be happy to test the full file as this didn't seem to prove very much to me.
On the AMD X4 core 4Ghz it happens to fast for me to even see the impact on the processor. Opening this file only takes processor use up from 10% to 30%. And all the links were perfect.
The computer I am running is brand new so no issue with the speed of my system. I am running a RAID5 with three shared drives so this may be having an impact although I have tried this on several computers in the office with the same result.
I agree that you need to test the entire file but at over 10Gb worth of linked images it may be a bit of a challenge.I have noticed when outputting the complete file that system resources used are in excess of 1Gb.
I appreciate your time and effort in looking at this for me but I am not sure what else to do given I can send the whole file to you.
How long did that page take to open for you?
We don't really have a good way to share big files. What we need to do this is some form of peer to peer network. There have been a few reports on the net about slowness connected to Linux file servers but as far as I know they have been resolved by recent updates to Linux.
Turn on all the warning in Color Management and open the file to check that some CM error isn't what is causing a slow point. I doubt this is the issue but.
I think I'd copy the files to the boot drive which I assume isn't RAID 5 as that would be very unusually and try again.There is some overhead with RAID 5 but most of that applies to writing files not reading them. It should be faster than a single disk.
The only other clue is that if the files were X4 and you open them in X5 there might be some 'translations' occurring. That should be easy to test by saving the file as X5 and opening that file to check.
HI Yani, the file took 30.8 seconds to open for me and it was a native X5 file. I have also copied the file to the boot drive on this and other computers and have the same result.
I have turned on all colour warnings on the main file and did receive errors so that may be part of the problem. I have created a test file and fixed the colour errors. It now seems to open a lot quicker.
I have just tried to output the pdf file again and Corel X5 crashed.
Might just have to go back to using X4 with it's memory hogging clipboard copy and paste feature.
