I am trying to use the contour tool to create shading as I have done before, but it is not cooperating on this curve (on left). The object on the right shows the effect I want. When I try to reduce the offset, I strangely get the message "contour offset too large" and then I can't increase the number of steps to get a smoother gradation.test.cdr
Here's a rough idea, but I have uploaded the file because the pasted jpg doesn't show the difference very well.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this, or is it just another buggy thing?
Thanks!
The message "Contour Offset is to large" means you will need to reduce this (Contour Offset) value. Try reducing this value first from say 0.017" TO 0.007", Then increase the steps.
Works as expected here in x6
Hope it helps
Hmmm, if you reduce the contour offset it allows more contours, not less, so something is reversed in your system.
Will the attached file work, or even open in your system?
test1.cdr
Unfortunately your file doesn't work here (X5 with all SP on XP SP3). When trying increase number of steps it automaticaly changes to 1.
I opened your test file in X5 and had no problems changing the offset to a larger or smaller number. If I made the offset too large I would get the "too large message" and it would bounce back down to a lower number, adjusting the steps accordingly.
Did you try resetting your workspace? Maybe the tool has gotten corrupted. Close CD and hold down the F8 key when reopening.

With your curve I got same result like you. After some changes of your curve (reverse curve direction, export as ai & importing back) the Contour Tool worked as expected.
Is right side curve with applied contour from my file working for you?
Best regards

Also, check that you have the latest updates at http://howto.corel.com/index.php/Corel:CorelDRAW_and_Corel_DESIGNER_-_Patches_and_Updates
Thanks for all the suggestions. Harry, I do have all the updates. Mek, your doc works as long as I don't change the size. The reverse/ai export-import doesn't work for me. Patti, I tried your suggestion, and it helped, but not completely: I was able to get more contour steps but not as many as I wanted. How perplexing. But it's reasonably satisfactory with the increased steps, so I'll just use that for now.
