So I have a bit of a problem which I am wandering if can even get worked out?
I created a design in Corel X5 that has PSD and TIFF images in it. The client needs them in an AI file. When I exported the file the images did not come in correctly they were pixelated and broken up.
I think this is a common problem and is there anywhere around it for it to be able to be exported correctly as an AI file. I really don't want to lose this job/client?
Sounds like you're using some kind of effects that are not supported in the AI format, Judy. What AI version are you exporting to?Do you have lenses/transparencies like drop shadows in your file?
Would it be possible to upload the CDR somewhere, so we can check what may be causing it?
I don't remember what version I exported it, would that make a difference?
I did not use any lenses, transparencies, or effects. The images I used in the file were placed flat PSD and TIFF files. Unfortunately I cannot show the CDR file because its protected and I signed a confidently agreement.
I just don't want to lose out on future jobs with this client because I am not able to export to ai correctly.
I hate to rain on anyone's parade. I recommend using the software the client expects the files back in.
I typically use anything else other than Illustrator when I can, even when they want Illy format back. I may use CD or XDP for as much as possible, but at some finishing stage, it will go into Illustrator and finished/saved from it if that's what the client wants to get returned.
That said, I cannot imagine flat images present an issue. Save at the highest version of AI that X5 can export. Failing that working, Export out as a PDF/X-3 or whatever the highest version of PDF CDX5 supports, making sure the image down sampling is higher than needed, then change the extension on the PDF to .ai

Maybe you could produce a simple CDR file that includes an object that produces the problem but does not include any material from your customer, so that it can be uploaded ?
okay, I think I uploaded a very simple example here. Client just emailed back and told me when she gets the ai file the images are very low res and pixelated. So when the AI file is being exported the images are not staying their original resolution.
Yep, looks pretty bad. In the screen shot, I published to PDF using the highest compatibility, which is Acrobat 9 in the case of using CDX7.
I exported as an AI file. I then opened the PDF and dragged the same bitmap from the PDF to the AI file for comparison.
I am attaching a ZIP of the PDF that I renamed the extension to AI. If that is opened in AI (which I have) the image is nice.
Yes, the example is a good one to demonstrate the problem.
One quick question -- CorelDraw says your bear is a PNG file at 300 x 300 dpi -- is that correct?
I don't have X5 or illustrator, but I've opened your file in X7, exported it to .AI (with CS5 and CS6 compatibility) and re-imported it to CorelDraw, at which point that bear is only 73dpi. So, its clear there is something wrong here.
But it is really puzzling if such an obvious problem has persisted from X5 to X7 without being fixed.
