how do I apply two different transparencies to one photo?

My photo starts from the upper left corner and covers about 1/2 the page in both directions. I want to fade it in from the right at the top and also from the left at the bottom, but at different rates of fading, distance and shape. Can I accomplish that at one time? Or, do I need to apply one transparency save it as a separate bitmap and then apply the second transparency?

    Edit in PhotoPaint

    1. Create an Object from Background (click right-most icon in Objects docker)
    2. Apply a mask that gives the transparency you want, then
    3. Apply a flat 100% transparency to the object

    Here's an example with a gradual fade up from the bottom and a tighter fade around the head.
