Hi, I hope some one can help me. I recently got a new coumputer, which has vista. I have installed my corel draw 12 graphics suite on it, but I am having problems. I get a message that "corel photo paint has stopped responding" and that it has stopped interacting with windows. Does it have to do with the fact that it may not be compatible with vista? and if so what do i do? is there a patch I can download?
I am happy to have found this site, and hope I can get some good information here.
thank you
Draw 12 is working fine on Vista for me as well....sofar

Hey everyone - I'm glad that I stumbled across this site. Definitely bookmarked for future reference!
I too am having some trouble with Vista. My new laptop came with Vista, so I'm kind of stuck with it. Corel 12 installs find and seems to run fine, however I run into trouble when trying to install SP1. The installation wizard halts and doesn't update the program, presumably when it discovers that you aren't running XP. Because it is a Windows .msp file, I can't find any options to run it in XP compatibility mode.
So my questions are:
1) For those of you running CGS12 on Vista, what was your method for upgrading to SP1?
2) Failing getting it patched to SP1, is there a way to disable the update notifications each time I start one of the applications? I am going to be using PhotoPain primarily, and based on the list of fixes in SP1, there are only a few minor issues in PhotoPaint that were fixed (most were in Draw).
Of course, the obvious answer would be to upgrade to X3, but I'm not a heavy user of the software and I haven't yet felt limited by version 12 (until my little Vista problem came along!), so I'd like to try and get the most out of 12 if I can. Thanks so much for any tips that you might have.

Rather than have the downloader check for updates, go to corel.com and choose the Support Page, then the Download and Patch page. Select the Other products including previous versions at the bottom and find Corel Graphics Suite 12. Select the appropriate download and when you get to a page that looks like this, do not click the button but click the hyperlinked text in the paragraph below. This will bring the file directly to your computer and bypass the downloader.

With the .msp File on your desktop, right click on the file and select the properties. On the compatibility tab, select win2k or XP and select the run as administrator box.
Cross your fingers.
If that doesn't work, I am out of ideas.
Good luck.
I even tried creating a .bat file that could launch the .msp file (because you can set XP compatibility for .bat files), and that didn't work either.
In my searching, I have come across some references to "Orca", a Microsoft utility that lets you open, modify, etc. .msi and .msp files. There's even a way to apply the patch (.msp) to the original installer file (.msi), which may circumvent our problem with the patch launching on its own. I may not have time for a few days to explorer it further, and I know very little about programming, but I'm willing to give it a shot. If someone beats me to it, all the better! :)
Let's keep trying. Please let me know if you have any other info, suggestions, or success getting version 12 patched on Vista.
I see the issue now. I went back and tried to duplicate your steps only to discover that my CDraw 12 Disks are already at SP1 level. That is why I did not encounter the difficulties you are having. With so many software installations over the last month, (New Vista Machine and a Convert of Existing Laptop), it is all beginning to run together for me.
I will do some more research and get back to you if I find out anything. Keep plugging.

I have a solution to implementing the update file and it is stupidly simple.
It occured to me that any patch file I ever delt with was usually only concerned with the exe file and in the case of smaller software companies I would often only have to copy and paste the new exe to correct folder.
I have corel with the update on an XP machine also and I have a local network. See where I am going?
I was going to just copy the exe files but just in case there were some other updated files for the help files etc I copied and pasted/overwrite the entire Corel folder from the XP machine to the Vista machine.
Ahaa, worked like a charm. The Vista machine is now at build 538 also. I fooled around with a few files in draw and photopaint and found no issues so far.
Mine showed that there were 274 megs of files to deal with so this could be done with a CD transfer also. My data files are stored elsewhere so they did not come into play.
Have fun, Dave

Hello,
I would recommend against copying the application directory from one computer to another... there might have been changes to the registery and other files in the Windows folder that you will not get using this method.
According to other sites, the way to install .msp files is to launch the Command Prompt as an Administrator (From the Windows menu, right click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator). Then use the msiexec command to launch the upgrade process. If you do a google search for "install .msp vista", you should find a few web sites that provide more information. I simply have to add that all I am writing here is untested and un-supported by Corel.

Thanks! I was hoping you'd chime in. I was going to wait the week anyway since I'm leaving town and hate breaking things just before I take off.
I don't actually USE version 12 anymore, but with students running who knows what, it's good to be able to see the applications side by side at times. I'm also sure SOMEONE will ask the question of 12 and Vista and it's good to be able to quote (without naming) someone who knows. Of course, I'll always give the same "official" line you do. "Only X3 has been officially tested and certified to run on Vista."
