Hello to all,
I would really appreciate any help with this issue.I'm using Coreldraw X3,operating system, Windows XP Professional version 2002, 1GB of RAM,free space of 4.56GB on C drive, 34.8GB on backup drive, display adapter Radeon X300,HP compaq dc7600 convertibleI'm having a lot of difficulties opening a series of files. I had been working on a laptop for a few months and upon returning to the office I tansfered the files to my desktop to complete thr final revisions. I worked on my desktop for 3wks without no problems and then one day I went to open the files and recieved this message on all of them:"Error reading a bitmap in file"I have since tried numerous methods with no success. Do you have any suggestions. I don't particularly want to redo 100 hours of revisions again! I'd GREATLY appriceate your help!!!!
You might want to contact Corel support because this has to be a known bug in X3. Most likely you have monochrome bitmaps or grayscale in these files. We too have had this happen. Perhaps you could attach one of the "bad" files and I'll see if it will open in X4. Hopefully someone on this forum has some other solution than having to buy X4. Curiously, if we could get the file to open, we could save it back to 12 and use Corel12 with no problem but by now I would think Corel support would have some answers since this is a long-standing issue.
I have contacted Corel but have yet to recieve a response. I hope they will have an answer on Monday. The bitmaps in these files are all CKYK photos that have been edited using Corel Photo-Paint. I've used the same method for a couple of years using X3 and never had this problem. Of course things like this happen when your already facing a deadline crunch.Since I'm a nexbie to this forum could you tell me how to attach a file?
Thanks
On reply screen to this, go to top of screen left, click on Options tab. It's the first function... File attachment.
I'll try the file too. Do you have backups of all the files?
the 'dd'
I've tried a couple of times to attach a file but after it's finished uploading I get a message "can't find web page". I'll try again later.
I've got several backups of all my files but they do the same thing. I recently went to open a file from last year and I had the same problem with it!!!! I did manage to open it on my laplop though. Prior to all these problems I was running out of space on my C drive so I moved this clients files to another drive. could this have caused the problem? I've since copied some back to C drive but they wouldn't open. I'm getting beyond frustrated with this!!! I've worked with Corel for 8 years and never had this kind of trouble.
I appreciate the help your offering me,

Have you cleaned out your Temp directory? If you have not done this recently, it may surprise you in how much disk space it is occupying and how it can, sometimes, interfere with some application programs.
To clean out your Temp directory, first close all applications, then click on Start->Run and in the popup dialog, enter (without the quotes) "%temp%". That will bring up a Windows Explorer, listing all the files in your Temp directory. Delete them all and then empty your recycle bin.
Now, try to open a troubled file. See if there is a difference. Please let us know if this helps or not. There is always something else to try.
It's much less likely a Corel problem... depending on the size of the bitmaps and what format they were saved in after editing in PP.
If a Windows OS problem could be lots of different things... pagefile size, updates and service packs, (SP3 can mess you around in certain configurations that only a tech expert could explain... check on Google), amount of RAM.
With file sizes, and temp files, and OS requirements and all it doesn't take long to burn up a GB of resources on just one file.
Be sure to check your C:/Windows\Temp directory. That Temp directory (different from your C:/Temp directory can get GB's of files that Windows has to try and deal with and it just runs out of snot eventually. Certain Computer protection software... AV and all... like SHAW secure just generate huge, and I mean humungous GB files and lots of them... it can be brutal.
The bitmaps may even have been corrupted somewhere in the OS and Program APP chain... especially if the OS ran out of processing power midstream.
Yeah, that's the thing with Web pages... could be your local ISP server is having a "brain glitch"... or some ISP server in the chain.
Good idea in this case to try another computer, like your laptop or whatever.
ps: Be sure to have good backups of your original files... use Windows Explorer (formerly File Manager) to look at them for anomalies in size or filename (like if there's a $ sign in front of them, or some such odd looking stuff)... turn on your show file extensions so you can see directly what file format you're dealing with in each case... look at them in Details mode in WE so you can see how big the files are easily... 1,024 KB is a 1.024 GB file or close to that depending on whether a KB is being measured as 1,000 bytes or 1,024 bytes.
I DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COREL - I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS!!!!!!!!!
UNFORTUNATELY UP TO THIS POINT, THERE IS NO WAY TO RECOVER THE FILE - BUT, I SEEMED TO HAVE DISCOVERED WHAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM!!!!!!
BY KNOWING WHAT'S CAUSING THE PROBLEM, YOU CAN PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE - UNTIL THE "BUG" IS FIXED!!!!!!
FIRST OF ALL, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FILE SIZE - AS I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH SINGLE FILES AS LARGE AS 3 GIGS!!!
THE CORRUPTION IS OCCURRING WHEN YOU SAVE THE FILE!!!!!
WHEN YOU GO TO SAVE YOUR FILE, CLICK "ADVANCED" AT THE BOTTOM. NEXT GO TO THE "FILE OPTIMIZATION" SECTION...MAKE SURE BITMAP AND OBJECT COMPRESSION IS NOT CHECKED!!!!
NOTE: THERE IS A BUG OR FLAW CAUSING ONE OR BOTH OF THESE OPTIONS TO AUTOMATICALLY BECOME CHECKED - EVEN IF IT WAS SAVED PROPERLY ONE TIME, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY REVERT AND CHECK ONE OR BOTH BOXES FOR COMPRESSION! MAKE SURE EACH AND EVERY TIME YOU SAVE YOUR PROJECT - BOTH BOXES ARE NOT CHECKED!!!
O.K. COREL FIX THIS BUG!!!!!!! IT ALSO DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE RELATED TO ANY SPECIFIC WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM!!!!!!! (THAT I HAVE NOTICED)
*SORRY TO SAY, IF YOUR FILE WAS SAVED INCORRECTLY, IT IS ALMOST CERTAINLY LOST!!!
THIS PERTAINS TO FILES THAT HAVE BITMAPPED IMAGES SUCH AS PHOTOGRAPHS OR SPECIAL EFFECTS ON TEXT SUCH AS DROP-SHADOWS, ETC.
