While I await delivery of my new camera, i was just thinking if there is any merit in going for CF over xD for memory cards. Ive ordered a 1GB xD card to get me started, but as the camera also accepts CF is it a better option? As for the connectivity, either CF or xD is fine for the transfer of images as I have media readers for both.

Hi Michael,1. I have not followed this thread so this may have already been mentioned.2. Neither am I aware of your camera or computer3. I am not even aware of your picture taking habits.4. Thus, I am fully prepared to give valuable advice.5. A 1 GByte memory sounds very skimpy to me. On my Panasonic FZ50 camera, I can only get 200 RAW pictures on an eight GByte card. If it were only 1 GByte, I could only get 25 pictures on one memory card.6. I also have to carry a spare battery for the camera. An average of 175 pictures per battery charge seems to be typical.Phil

As for myself and few others, we are not that rich, so we can only go to one of the remote island of the Langkawi islands in northern Malaysia. Praying for 2 clear nights, we have to carry more than 20 kgs of equipments travelling on ferry and boat. We did that 2-3 times a year. Though exhausting, it's definitely worthy. This is one of the shot I took on film back in 2006. I'm yet to produce any nice photo with my 300D over there. Looking forward for the upcoming trip in December. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g222/MichaelTCT/Astronomy/scan0001-1.jpg For stacking, there are many wonderful freewares available. For planetary imaging using webcam, Registax is the best. As for deep sky digital imaging, DeepSkyStacker and Iris are among the few commonly used. Though Persied shower this time is a great disappointment, I don't have to wait another 12 months because we still have Leonid and Geminid coming up soon Let's pray.

Thats another fantastic image - I wont pretend to know what part of the sky that is as im no astronomer :(
Hopefully you will have good weather for the next sheduled meteor showers :)
Hi Phil,
Thanks for your comment.I couldn't find the memory card capacity table in the user manual, so I don't have an idea on the maximum number of shots capable for 1GB in RAW format.
At the moment, I'm not taking in RAW format since I'm yet to learn how to do the processing. All my previous photos were taken in the highest JPEG format. I would like to try to take in RAW format as I know it's always the best for processing, but I'm yet to be able to do so given the weather condition here.Perhaps when I start taking in RAW, I may find 1GB is not enough
As for the battery, I have three of them, so no problem for me
Edit: I've checked with my friend, a raw picture is about 4 MB in size, so a 1GB card can take up to 200 over shots. Normally for one object, he takes about 20 x 3 mins, so in one night, 1GB is more than enough.
P/S: Could it be that you are actually saving in TIFF rather than RAW? Just a wild guess...
That is the Pleiades open cluster in the constealltion of Taurus.I took that when I was still "young" in astrophotography.
Thanks for your blessing and hopefull I can have a few to show in the coming showers.
Cheers.
