Thanks to the excellent install directions on this forum and the Ventura FAQ, I have Ventura 10 running in Windows 7 64-bit. But I cannot print Open Fonts to the printer or to Acrobat Professional. Has anyone had success using Open Fonts? Or is it out of the question? (I do transfer the file to an XP laptop and print from there).
I understand that the mfc42.dll is a piece of the C++ programing system, Version 6. Can we use a later version of C++ and get better results? I would appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me in these areas, I'm sure no programmer. Thanks!
That's correct. Open type does not print, but T1 and TT do print correctly.
I'm going to propose a solution to my own problems running Ventura 10 under Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, and being able to print Open Type fonts. Here is what I have tried.
I have tried installing Ventura 10 directly under Windows 7, 64-bit, according to Ventura FAQ instructions. Program ran with occasional font display issues (using latest ATI Radeon Catalyst Driver for 64-bit), and could not print Open Fonts. T1 and TT printed.
I installed Windows Virtual PC with XP mode. Installed Ventura 10. Program crashed frequently with some fonts displaying incorrectly and the same Open Font printing issues as above.
I installed the free VMWare Player Version 3.01. Installed my own 32-bit copy of XP Professional. Installed Ventura 10 with normal installation. The same file that wouldn't print above now prints fine with Open Fonts and T1 fonts.Ventura seems to run stable but I will test further.
The VMWare virtual machine works! Without knowing what's "under the hood," it seems more solid than Virtual PC. Plus, a virtual machine is more convenient than dual-booting since you can still access your main desktop. I have tested printing but have not tested extended editing, etc.
I'm quite hopeful this solution will provide a stable platform to keep Ventura 10 running for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, this will help others like myself just now making the transition to a 64-bit OS.
FYI, as per a discussion in the Ventura newsgroup, OpenType font files with an *.otf extension (aka OT/CFF or "PostScript outlines") will not print and may make the publication unstable. However, OpenType font files with a *.ttf extension (aka OT/TTF or "TrueType outlines") are fine.
Thanks, for the info. Pardon my ignorance but I'm not sure how to tell which kind of Open Type fonts I have (other than I've had problems with them). Is there a link to the Ventura newsgroup? Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
