It finally died... what's my new computer going to be?

Dear David,

After many years of service it died? What's my choices for a new computer. Well, new motherboard etc?

I'm thinking this bit of used cheap and cheerful from ebay.

AMD EPYC Supermicro H11SSL-i + 7551P 32cores 64threads 2.0 GHz motherboard+ CPU

What you think?

Yani

  • You know what I think of CorelDRAW and anything AMD.

    • Need to do more things than Corel Draw. Ignoring that and the AMD headspace...

It's $700US for 32 cores 16 threads + motherboard. The negative in the clock speed of 2.2 GHz.

      $4,000+ for a new 32 core, 5 GHz max.

Sounds like a lot of bang for the buck.

      • I agree but it's 50/50 pot luck for Drsw performance.

It's odd as hell but my wife has an AMD laptop for email/web, shopping and general BS. It runs Draw just fine even though it's AMD and not robust. I can't figure it out.

        • OK then we agree this is an OK experiment. It lacks processor speed but has 8 way RAM.

          • Yes a bang for the buck but a 50/50 chance for Draw!

            • Have a lot at the impact of AI on DaVinci Resolve, some incredible masking at is just too easy. You just scribble over the thing to mask, usually a person and it uses the movement as part of the mask isolation. They had all their ducks in a row before going into this. Not having duck in a row on issues that have existed for too long as going to muck with implementing this.

There some great use cases for SketchUp where ChatGPT write Ruby code that is executed in the console.

Something like that has all sort of possibilities, impossible to know... Perhaps a way to paint feathers using code, for example.

It was nothing 12 months ago. What has captured interest like this before?

              • At my age I wonder how much AI integration I'll see.  As far as 2d static images I'm not real impressed. The noise reduction,  sharpening tools have me waiting until the next upgrade.  However the technology is in its infancy.

            • I've installed Linux Rocky 9.2...

Can I say it is so much nicer than Windows! That crap they have added and the messy interface gone. It looks simple and proper.

Unfortunately I can see much in the way of "wine" or virtual machines that is going to work decently on the UHD monitor.

              • All that crap is what the kids want today, the kids for a very large part are useless.

                • 8 months of Zero Windows!

Just came in today as Firefox has you guys on my start page.

I did spend 2 weeks going through the process of installing a virtual machine, added another graphics card and allocated that to be dead until Windows starts. That works fine. I've barely even started the VM and been using mostly Linux software.

I asked questions of GIMP developers about AI. They won't add any commercial software and won't go near AI while there remains outstanding copyright issues.

                  • I'm glad that this worked out for you. I'm still running the same i9 Windows 10 system I have been. It's going on 5 and I work the hell out of it so hopefully Windows 11 will be viable soon.

I don't know if it's phising or not but I got an email today supposedly frome Alludo saying the public support forum was ending on 2/12/24. I haven't read it in detail but looking into that today. I don't think it involves this forum but it wouldn't surprise me it's pretty much dead here most times.

                    • Here's some of what I've been playing with, I've been practicing getting feather detail on small birds.  I'm getting 350 to 500% increase in size in print with some of my best shots.  The Kinglets have been moderately cooperative this is a female Downy Woodpecker it's about 3.5 to 4.5 inches, this one is about 3.5.  It amazes me that Corel produces vector and image applications and has such as poor web site.
