Very slow copy, open and save.

With latest updates of Windows 10 - Corel become ultra slow. Do anybody now how to find issue occur and how to avoid that behavior?

  • I have noticed that also creating new document takes too much time.

  • I have AMD RX480 GPU. Dropped back to WHQL driver 17.7.2 (per suggestion on this site). Used "Clean Install" option. Seems to have fixed things for me. The features I used that were SLOW (20 to 50 seconds) are now approximately normal speed -- nearly instantaneous to a couple seconds. Other people may have different results.

I have a help session booked. However, I will cancel that because the fix suggested on this forum site worked.

    For what its worth.

  • I am very sad to announce that Corel doesn't give a sh*t about us, customers!
Why am I saying that? Because it's TRUE! There's a WELL KNOWN issue since (at least) version X8... that after Windows 10 Fall Creators + Latest AMD drivers cause CorelDRAW to act SLOWLY AS HELL! It's been complained, complained... and complained. Some Corel workers already came to this forum to tell us to wait for a solution... that they were working on a possible fix... BLAH BLAH BLAH! Bullsh*t!
Since M$ is about to release the new update.... I've already downloaded it and installed a fresh brand new Windows 10 with "Spring" Creators (April Update) possible RTM version build 17133... and.....?? NOTHING, Corel still looks like sh*t... So, Corel released CorelDRAW 2018 (WOW!!) a "brand new" CorelDRAW!!! NOPE! It's the same sh*t as before ... I mean, the same core program.. so the problems from X8 were inherited to 2017 and now to 2018....

So, for my "surprise" (or not) CorelDRAW 2018 (doesn't) work the same way as it's predecessor ... doesn't bother to update your Windows 10 because that won't work neither.

Well, here I am, with an OUTDATED Windows version to work and ANOTHER SSD with updated Windows version to do other stuff!

BTW, as Corel Company doesn't care about us, I'm think of not caring about it... so I'll just start using a pirated version of Corel so I can't complain of wasting money.... or maybe I'll start improving my Illustrator skills to finally retire Corel...

PS: That's me get something off my chest.... sadly, AGAIN! (I really thought Corel 2018 would make the difference).

PS2: BTW ... THANKS for NOTHING Corel!

    • Does the video card software have a  selection to  use GPU?  My AMD system went wonk after a Windows update and selecting that check box in the Radon control software fixed it.

      • Didn't understand

      • David, could you please post a screenshot of your Radeon software that has this checkbox visible in it so others can check into if their driver version has it also?

        • Thanks for the tip -- it corroborates my evaluation that GPU acceleration was the culprit. I did some reading. I understand your suggestion may work on older W10 versions. I could find no setting of that type in my up to date W10 system. However, according to a W10 spokesperson the option is no longer there - which is why I could not find it.

According to the spokes person in up-to-date W10: "[AMD GPU] Hardware acceleration on Windows 10 is turned on by default."

He goes on to say there is no longer a way to turn it off -- other than to go back to an older AMD Driver that may have the option -- or contact AMD to change their driver -- or, presumably, contact Corel to fix things on their end. Again, older versions of Windows did have the suggested fix.

I may have misunderstood or my information may not apply depending on which Windows version and which GPU one has.

Meantime, I'm trying out other vector drawing applications and plan to change from Corel -- rather than continue to use an otherwise way out of date GPU driver. So far, the main issue is in CDraw. CPaint seems to be fast.

If someone has found the "magic" cure in up-to-date W10, please share.

          FWIW

EDIT: My browser has a hardware acceleration "on/off" selection. A video editing application I haven't used in over a year also has "on/off" (I've had to use it). So, presumably, Corel could provide an acceleration "on/off" choice.

          • I notice that CD2018 is said to have the ability to turn GPU acceleration on and off. However, if they can do that for 2018, it makes sense to put it in a 2017 update. If it works in 2017, I would consider buying 2018. However, I don't want to "try and see" 2018 for $199 -- first I want to "see" it work in 2017. The on/off ability is in some other apps I have (though they run okay in the "on" mode.

            • You don't have to spend a dime use the trial version and only buy 2018 if it suits your needs

              • I tried CD2018 for free and timed with a stopwatch.

CD2017 Draw Load: 31 seconds, Draw Copy 32 seconds. Copy/paste in-file  using "+" key is instantaneous (less than a second). However, the "+" copy does not transfer to other documents e.g. Paint.

CD2018 Draw Load: 23 seconds, Draw Copy 33 seconds. Copy using in-file the "+" key is instantaneous (less than a second).

Expect acceptable load to be a few seconds at most and copy to be nearly instantaneous (a couple seconds would be acceptable). It used to be that way.

I've noted in the past with 2017 the load and copy are virtually independent of image complexity. It always takes about that long.

In CD2017 Paint Load and Copy are nearly instantaneous (a couple seconds). As they should be.

                • So it comes down to features then

                  • Copy/paste in-file  using "+" key is instantaneous (less than a second).

                    I think that's a "Duplicate" operation, not a Copy/Paste - so no Clipboard involved.

                • I noticed today (May 11, 2018) Corel management has replied regarding the/my issue (that I have described in this thread) which others of us also share and describe.

They say Microsoft broke it. But, Corel will try to fix it by changing CorelDraw code. They will try to fix CD2018 first. Implication is that it will take weeks.

No doubt, many others who have posted and followed this concern have received the same email (pointing to the official response) that I received.

                  • It's more companies than just Corel software that are having issues.  I'm wondering if MS has no regard for AMD or if AMD simply cannot keep up with the demands of the Windows updates
