In your experience, what is the best way to close an object consisting of multiple individual lines to enable a fill color? So far I've just been retracing the objects, but there has to be an easier way.
There is no best way. It depend on how the lines are arranged. One way, If the lines actually meet or cross, the Smart Fill tool works great. It actually creates a new object and them fills the new one. Drag he fill away and give it an outline and delete the fill or not. Or just delete the original lines and give the new fill an outline if desired.
Hi.
Yep. Smart fill is relatively new, and a very powerrful tool. There surely are other ways too. Post a file here and we can see what works best for your particular situation.

SmartFill tool, where have you been all my life?
Hello G.; Like Jack showed you is one way. and it depends on what you want to do afere you have joined it, I make sure all the lines are touching and convert it to a bitmap then trace it for a joined vector drawing
