With X4 I can right click a piece of text - with pick tool - and drag the selected text to an open area and the text is duplicated. With X5 this does not work - text is locked. The only way to duplicate is to copy / paste. Is there a setting that needs to be reset.

Hi.
The right click copy is a toggle button. While dragiing tap the right mouse button just once. A plus sign will appear next to the soon to be placed item and the original will appear as well. When you release the left mouse button a copy will be placed.
Another tap of the right mouse button would untoggle the copy mode.
Also try Ctrl D to duplicate the item.
