Hi All,
Im trying to learn the basics using coreldraw graphics suite x5. some things Ive picked up relatively easily, other things which I expected to be quite simple are proving more difficult.
I have 2 questions here. if you needed to recreate the example logo below, scanned from a letterhead, how would you go about it? if anybody had the time to talk me through the basics it would be greatly appreciated.
secondly, if I wanted to create this logo from scratch, how would I go about creating the outer shape?
pete
Here we go (although I am using X4 -- don't have X5 -- but controls should be similar):
Graewerld,
In your last step, what did you mean "double click it will allow you to slope the letters in place" I get a context menu in X5 when I double click text. I've never heard of this trick before.

Hello scottb80; Graewerld is saying if you double click the text ( or any object ) your handles will change so you can rotate or slant it.

Slope, Slant, ...Skew.
You all need a beer.

Well, when I got to the secret stash spot at the beach, this is what I found:
Hello Graewerld; DONT ya just hate it when that happens. ARE the ALL EMPtY

Click them seperately (not all at once).
To create the shape(s) of the outer shape, I would use one of the drawing tools; pen or polyline, and drop nodes in a few places along the outer edge of one of the shapes. Then using the shape tool, make the outline lines fit the shape, and add/remove nodes as I need, and change the node type, all in all until I get one of the shapes as I want it. Then I would use the Pick tool to select the shape and then duplicate that shape and invert it and reposition it until the two shapes look like that in the scan.
EDIT:
Wouldn't you know, Graewerld beat me to it...... (I must be getting old!)

Nahhhh! Just that great minds think alike.
thanks guys, once again for helping me out, and so quickly too. its not exactly the same, but it only took a few minutes to achieve the logo below.
If I wanted to create a similar sort of thing from scratch, what would be the best way to about that?

Therein lies the $64,000 question -- it all has to do with artistic eye and creativity on the one side, or the direction from a customer on the other. Play with different attempts to be creative and see where your imagination goes. Have fun with it. There is no wrong way to doing this.
Hello purplepanda; There are some video's on the disk for CorelDraw, watch them. Graewerld and Hugh showed you one way of doing what you wanted to know, which I think is as good as any and better than others. It depends on how much and how fast you want to learn. There are people on the site that sell video's of how to's for beginners and those that have been using Corel for a while. Most people that buy a high end graphics program have a job to do and are in a harry learn. Play with the program and see what all the tools do, and have fun.
My Thoughts GeorgePS I don't think you are slowing down any Hugh it's that Graewerld lives up north and has to type faster to stay worm. lol
purplepanda I hope you are paying attention how fast a good graphics man picks up on the can logo's
WOW George
