I would be grateful for some help regarding bleeds and cut contour lines.
I am working on a project with various different contour shapes (see sample). Each shape has 2 different coloured contours. On top of the shape is another shape acting as a product header. This header has a different colour from the product object. At the moment I have grouped both these objects as they are going to be filled with printed content on front and reverse side and I must be sure to have a 100% alignment front and back.
My questions:
How do I include bleeds as well as a cut contour line for both objects? With the attached sample the letter A has an outer blue contour of 1.5 cm. How do I include the necessary bleed? Command 'outside boundary' doesn't work because I lose the cut shape within the design. Using a third contour "inside" blue contour also doesn't work.
I hope the description of the problem is clear. Can anyone help? Many thanks. Sonny
Is this more or less what you need to end up with?
Well done! This is exactly what I need! I have in the meantime come up with the solution myself by "breaking the contour groups apart" and than adding the contour and bleed. One last problem, though. Ideally I would like the header at the top behind the letter shape. If I do that, however, than the blue bleed is visible. My bleed was 4mm thick. Maybe I don't need so much, as I can see from your sample. Are there any set rules how thick the outline for a cut contour is to be? Yours is hairline, I think?

The cut contour requirements are usually explained with your equipment. Some need the color named something like CutContour and a defined width below a certain size.
While I didn't take the time to line it up precisely, the stacking order with the tag on top is likely to work out best. In my screen shot, I should have moved the tag up slightly.
Yes, you need to break the contour apart. So I make the final changes on a copy in case I need to redo the widths, colors, etc.
Also, I have never done designs for cutting. So it was all a guess. I do work on files for a couple local screen printers. So I make use of Arrange, Shaping, Boundary (I'm using X6 here) quite a bit for making the white ground often needed. Which, of course, doesn't work for you needing the bleed as well. But adding the outlines to the back most part of the contour (once broke apart) and for the tag means that the Boundary command hits the edge of the selected objects, the outlines being what then bleeds. Because the tag itself is an outline, I just make the outline width larger than I needed and the Boundary command splits the outline.

Thanks a lot, Mike. I give the designs to an outhouse commercial printing firm. Therefore I am not familiar with what the requirements are. I will check with the printer to see what they suggest.

Hello Sonny1; If you need to you can use my outhouse!!! lol
Sonny, we have a large format digital Versacamm and have to do this everyday all day long.
Get to be BFF's with your contour, boundary and smart fill tools and you'll be set to do cutcontours around multi-colored objects.
Hi Diane. Thanks for the sample - header at the back of design. With this minimal bleed the middle bit where the bleed is not cut still looks ok.
