Eraser has turned into a "paint" tool

I've been using X3 for a couple of years. I often cut-out a portion of an image (jpeg usually) then use the eraser tool to remove unwanted portions of the object. Until recently the "erased" portion of the object was transparent, i.e., the background image would show through. Now the earaser "paints" the object with the either the background or foreground color (or white) none of which are transparent. I do not know what I changed to cause this. Nothing in the eraser tool properties appears to address this issue. [Help (eraser)recommends "changing settings on the properties bar."] Any insight would be appreciated.

I've discovered that the "eraser to paint tool" effect takes place when I've copied the object to a "cpt" file for editing that does not have an image background. If I place the object over an file with a background image the eraser tool works as I think it should, i.e., it removes the erased portion of the object and lets the "background" image show through. My "problem" is solved but if anyone can explain the difference in the two uses of the eraser tool, I would still like to know why (I don't see any utility in an eraser that "paints.")

Hi Rick,
Have you perhaps found out what happend that your eraser turned into a 'paint'tool, and even more important, did you find out how to set this back to an eraser ?
Now everytime I start up the computer, and Corel PhotoPaint, the eraser-icon already is a paint-icon. Please let me know if you have the solution !! Thanks !! Regards, Ted Anema, The Netherlands

have you tried resetting your workspace by starting up photopaint while holding F8?

Hi Rick,

Hopefully the following will make things clearer for you:

the Eraser Tool always erases and does nothing more

if you are working on an image with no layers then the Eraser Tool will leave whatever colour you have selected as your Background Color (i.e. the Background Fill Color shown in the toolbox where the Foregorund/Background/Fill colour swatches reside).

To avoid any confusion here, say you create a new image with the default white background and paint some blue onto it. You then double-click the Background Fill colour swatch and change the Background Fill colour to red. Nothing has changed in the image so far, you have only set a new Background Fill Colour, but the image you are looking at is still mainly white. Using the eraser will now leave red anywhere you erase. PP now thinks that you have a mainly white image with some blue painted onto it. Erasing the blue or the white areas will leave you with the Background colour, red.

if you have an Object (layer) in your image then erasing it will always show whatever is below it. If there is a coloured background it will show through, if there is another Object it will show through, if your layer is floating above nothing (there is no Background layer in the image/Object Docker) then you will see the checkerbord pattern below when you erase.

That is really all there is to it. Erase an Object and you get whatever is below it, erase a fattened image you get the Background colour.
