I have an Epson R1800 - prints up to 13" wide and will take roll paper. It uses the Ultrachrome inks and I've been pretty impressed with the print quality. Seems to be a decent fit for a "home" printer. Epson has them in the refurb page for about $315 and free shipping unless you're in a hurry.
I also have the 4000 but it prints 17" and takes up a LOT of space! (and costs a lot more). If you need that kind of print width then that or the 4800 (which replaced it) is your baby.
As Kathy said, I don't think you can beat Epson's Ultrabright and Durabright inks for the kind of work you're doing. I've not actually tried the art canvases on my printers. I use the craft fabric for children's books and find the inks wear nicely and are even washable. I figure if a toddler can't ruin it in a year, the ink has to be good. The colors are also nice and bright on the fabric. I've also printed from Painter X using the same printers, but not on the fabric. For Painter X stuff, if I want it printed on art canvas, I send it off to someone else to giclee.

I can second the "thumbs up" view on the R1800 - very good price for what you get, very hard wearing ink, and prints fine on "real canvas" paper :)
