Long time user, first time typer :)
We recently had to upgrade to a new cpu (windows 7) and now when I try to open or import in CorelDraw I have to type in the file name + the file extension (or search and click on the name in a list) I have a thousand files all named numerically so all I've had to do in the past is just type the file name (ie 110), hit enter on the keyboard and the file would open or import. Does anyone know how to change it so I don't have to add the extension?
Thanks!!
Sue
I'm not sure if its the cause of your problem, but its always sensible to make sure this option is off:
Windows, in its infinite lack of wisdom, mistakenly thinks people shouldn't see file extensions but it is always better to know what your files are rather than having to guess.
To get to the list, browse to any folder in windows explorer, go to tools > folder options and scroll the list down a bit.
Above is for windows 7 and might be slightly different in other versions.
Another thought -- when you browse to a folder in CorelDraw (eg to open CDR files) you usually see a dropdown in the bottom right:
If you change the dropdown to CDR (or whatever is appropriate for the operation you are doing) only CDR files will be shown and I think that setting will usually be remembered for the next time you open files of the same type.
Again, above is for windows 7 and might not be available in earlier versions.
That may be the difference. The file open screens are part of windows, not CorelDraw, which is why they look different and possibly perform differently too. But I tried it in X4 which I still have on an XP machine and could not get it to work without the CDR even there.
I did get it to work in X7 photopaint (but not X7 CorelDraw) so it probably ought to be possible, but I don't think its something you can configure -- unless somebody else knows differently.
I've been going back and forth... is it a Windows setting or Corel? If it's Windows shouldn't it be consistent that I would have to type the extension in all programs?
Thanks for your help though
Hello Swich; X3 is old and things are different from XP to even Vista much less Windows 7 or 8. I think Harry has given you all the possible thing that I know of. but seeings how you updated Windows why not Corel also, and you could download the 30 trial to try it out.
George
Unfortunately according to HarryLondon it continues to be a problem in X7 draw. But thanks.
According to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/windows-7-wont-let-me-change-folder-or-startup-to/71dd8a93-483e-4b1e-8b0b-1982eb7ec671 classic view was phased out after vista. So it seems classic mode is not a possible solution here.
What you should find is that windows 7 does an automatic wildcard search on the name as you type it, therefore you don't need to type the full filename:
I'm using jpg for the example because I don't have a suitable large number of numerically named CDR files, but in the above it is only necessary to type 545 and then click on the correct choice to select it -- which saves a few keystrokes compared with keying in the entire filename.
Its curious, but if this feature has been absent since X4, the surprising thing is that nobody seems to have asked to have it back before.
I'm surprised too - and still not positive where the problem is. It worked fine in XP. It's only 7 where there's a problem. But why do some files open without the extension is some programs and yet it doesn't work in Corel?
Can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!
I'm guessing that in those programs, users may have reported that it behaved differently in windows 7 and the programmer has done something inside the program to work round the difference. Or perhaps the other programs are just using different function calls.
