While I await delivery of my new camera, i was just thinking if there is any merit in going for CF over xD for memory cards. Ive ordered a 1GB xD card to get me started, but as the camera also accepts CF is it a better option? As for the connectivity, either CF or xD is fine for the transfer of images as I have media readers for both.

I prefer CF to XD because of the robust nature of the card. I like the feel. However, that being said, every laptop I've ever purchased has card readers built-in did not accomodate CF. XD did fit every one. Ergo, I was and am forced to carry a card reader when I shouldn't have to. That, to me, is the only real downside I've experienced.
I recently changed from a camera that had a CF card to one with an xD card format... I didn't notice any difference, except in the size of the card (xD is easier to loose). I would not choose my camera based on the card format, much more on the features of the camera itself. It also depends if you have a previous camera that has one of the two formats and you have previous cards available. Not sure if there is a huge price difference. You might want to check a site such as http://dpreview.com for more information to choose your camera. One thing to check though is that the card(s) you purchase is (are) as fast as possible... this makes a huge difference, especially when shooting in RAW.

Thanks for that Rikk, I agree that CF does appear far more robust.
RE using external card readers, you can actually get internal CF adaptors for laptops with PC or Expresscard slots. should make for less things to lug around.

Only if you aren't already using them.
Thanks Gérard,
Well, the camera thats on the way is actually a Fuji Finepix S9600 (S9100 in the US I believe) simply based upon good recommendation and the camera's featureset. Im not ready for a full DSLR so a bridge camera made more sense to me at this stage.
The previous camera I have takes SD, so its a complete change whether I choose CF or xD really. As I hope to play with RAW, I will probably go for a few 1GB cards at least to start with. I know the camera's predecessor (S9500/S9000) is listed on PP X4's supported list for RAW import, so I wonder whether it will import from this model. If not, its no problem, I will convert to TIFF using the cam software.
