Smear - brush....tools will not work on image?

I am not sure what I am doing wrong or if I have turned the tools off some how.

I am unable to smear or use the brush tools on digital images opened in PhotoPaint.
Please help me...

    I use Corel Photo-Paint X4.
    I tried to smear with Custom smear on a photo and it worked perfect.

    I dont know what version you have, but have you installed service packs for the specific version?
    Have you tried using the F8 key? (hold down key and then start program, while keep holding down key, click OK.


    OR, have you made a very human misstake of NOT choosing the right Object in the Docker?
    If you have more than one object in the Docker, see to that the correct object is selected, and then use the smear tool
