Discouraged in CNEWS and here on finding a solution on running Ventura 10 on Vista 64 Bit , I sought a way to install the program anyway.
Create a directory on the desktop, copy the entire Ventura CD into the folder. Select the Setup32.exe file and right click and choose properties. Set compatibility to XP. Check Run as Administrator.
Double Click the file and Ventura installs.
It launches and appears to run but I shall do some more testing.
Hi Rikk,
On Vista Ultimate 64 bit, tried what you did, Ventura 10 ran once perfectly.
The next time I ran Ventura 10, I got a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error.
Program: ... (x86)\Corel\Ventura 10\Programs\ventura.exe abnormal program termination.
This is a real pity, because I love Ventura 10, and I would really like it to work under Vista 64 bit.
Cheers, Jonathan
Well, I am doing slightly better. I did get it to open initially. THen, I got the same message you did. Then, I double clicked on exisitng VP files and they opened. Close them and the error appears on the next opening. I am still working on it.
So far Ventura is the only program not successfully migrated to X64 (I am using Home Premium version )
Give me a couple of days and I will see if I can figure out where it is hanging.
I have. Actually, I am trying combinations of ventura executables in various compatiblity states. There is something about the intitial launch that works and subsequents not. That is a key I have to decipher.
With my new Vista 64 laptop, I have exactly three four things that don't work right.
Ventura
Quicktime (no 64 bit compatible version yet)
VN-2100PC Olympus Voice Recorder
Canon 20D
The latter are missing 64 bit drivers and are obsolete so there's not much hope. I will likely write drivers for the first two based on the 32 bit drivers but Ventura --- That is another animal all together. I would hate to have to use Indezign... it works (anyone listening.) That was a big echo!
Eric, I will do my darndest.
I've pretty much followed what Rikk has done in trying to get Ventura to work.
I also cannot get Canon EOS1Ds, 1Ds Mk II or Mk III to work - it seems that Canon are not interested in supporting 64 bit.
I have a Windows XP Pro laptop dedicated to downloading from the cameras and then from there to the server for storage etc.

700.00 Consumer machines are available today at your local electronics store with Vista 64 Bit OS standard. People are buying these machines today.
Hardware manufacturers need to realize I am not going to replace a 1300.00 camera to make it work with a 700.00 laptop. But I might not buy their brand next time because I know it will be obsolete with a new software platform.
Software makers likewise need to realize that applications such as Ventura are used for YEARS (since 2002) and that patches-at minimum-are requisite for keeping them in the game. Ventura must be updated to run on X64. Otherwise, if I have to revert to Indesign, I am more likely to expand my use of other CS3 products that means Draw and PhotoPaint become at risk. I loaded 48 applications and numerous applets onto my new machine and Ventura and Quicktime are the only two that don't work. All in all, that isn't too bad but they are programs I use weekly if not more often.
There was a poll here on the forum a while back (I can't find it right now) showing OS penetration. There were a few 64 Bit OSs creeping in and it will be growing.
Ventura must continue to run. If I can't find a way to make it run on X64 and Corel won't release a patch then I am being asked to buy another product.
Till then, I will continue to tweak Ventura and see if I can get it working reliably. I almost hope I don't. It would be great news for the Ventura community but it lets Corel off the hook in deciding and implementing a forward-looking solution with regards to Ventura.
End Rant.
Well said Rikk!
