I just stumbled upon THIS LINK which is part says of CorelDraw, "Later this year, upgrades (download and box products) will no longer be available. Add Upgrade Protection to your purchase to get future versions at a fraction of the cost or choose a subscription, to always stay current." I did not take part in the webinar from earlier today, which I assume detailed what will happen later this year. Does anyone know? Does this mean Corel is moving to a subscription-only model for Draw? Am I correct to assume that anyone who has a licensed product before a subscription-only model begins will be able to keep that license, to use that version, regardless of his or her subscription status?
Thanks for your time.
Corel is committed to provide both subscription and perpetual license options going forward.
The information provided on the Purchase Options tab on the product page is meant to provide a heads-up that going forward (i.e. "later this year"), discounted Upgrades from all older versions of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite will no longer be part of the offering. So now is the chance to upgrade your CorelDRAW Graphics Suite to the latest CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2019, leveraging the Upgrade pricing while it's still available.
What happens in a year from now? The most affordable way to stay up-to-date and also keep software ownership of the latest version for perpetual use will be the Upgrade Protection Program as it is now. With an active Upgrade Protection you receive future versions at a fraction of the cost of what the Upgrade product is currently offered at. Yes, you need to stay on Upgrade Protection to keep that option to stay up-to-date with the new versions for perpetual use.
We will continue to offer promotions to current version owners of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite with future version releases. Customers who own the current version, will be offered the opportunity to purchase the new (next) version without having to pay the Full version price. However, Upgrade Protection will certainly be the best-price option you can get, plus you receive the new version at the time of its release.
Customers will still be able to purchase new licenses for perpetual use - there is no intention to stop the software ownership purchase options in the foreseeable future.
I'm still confused by this "upgrade protection" system.
I'm not currently enrolled in the upgrade protection program. So let's say for example I purchase an upgrade of CorelDRAW 2019 for $199, plus the $99 for upgrade protection for $298 total. When CorelDRAW 2020 is released how much will I have to pay for that? Am I paying $99 just to have a chance to pay an additional $99 (or whatever "fraction of the cost" means) for a CorelDRAW 2020 upgrade? Or is that yearly $99 revolving fee for upgrade protection actually buying the new versions? The wording is confusing. I can't tell if I would be paying as little as $99 per year to stay up to date or possibly as much as $298 per year just to continue being able to upgrade.
I agree, Bobby. I made a similar point in a post that for some reason vanished after I clicked the "Reply" button.
In addition, I ask how the new "Upgrade Protection" approach changes anything for those who currently pay for what used to be called a "Premium Membership." Until recently, Corel issued a new edition of the Draw suite every two years, for the upgrade version of which it charged $199US. At the same time, so-called "Premium Membership" participants paid $99US/year and received new editions without additional charge. So, for $198US ($99x2) premium membership people received a product that to non-premium membership purchasers cost $199. Basically, no savings.
But Corel seems now to have moved to an annual update of the suite. Does this mean that each year's "upgrade" edition will still cost $199, but "Upgrade Protection" customers will get them for $99/year? As you ask, Bobby, what does a "fraction" of the price mean? A "fraction" of what? What will be the final cost to a) brand new Corel Draw customers? b) customers who buy every new version of the suite, but do not enroll in the Update Protection program? c) customers who maintain a current membership in the Update Protection program? d) customers who buy new editions of the suite, but not every new release?
I've maintained a premium membership for four years or so, and received a serial number for version 2019 without additional cost. Assuming I maintain my Upgrade Protection membership, will I pay any additional charge for the next edition of the suite?
Hoping for additional clarification.
"Upgrade Protection" has taken the place of what was called "Premium Membership" a few versions back. The program you are signed up for is the Upgrade Protection and that's why you received the Graphics Suite 2019 Upgrade in an email at no additional cost. As long as you're signed up in the Upgrade Protection Program you receive the new releases for perpetual use.And the annual Upgrade Protection fee is what we refer to as "a fraction of the cost" of an Upgrade version you purchase.
Thanks for the additional information, Klaus, but I'm still not 100% clear as to the ramifications of the new approach. Hence, I ask:
Thanks for your consideration of my questions, Klaus!
I'll try to explain as clear as possible.
- you can buy a new version (such as CorelDRAW 2019, 2020, etc) for a lifetime. Nobody force you to update, upgrade or change if you don't want. You do not have to pay anything else, but your program will not be updated automatically.
- you can choose subscription, it's something like rent the program. You'll pay a monthly/annual fee, and you receive all new versions when are available. if you do not want to continue using it, do not pay more and the program is deactivated at the end of the period.
- you can choose an intermediate option: buy the program with upgrades at less price ("Upgrade Protection Program").
Until now, if you have a previous version (such as X4, X7, etc) you can upgrade for a fraction of the cost (half price for example). But some people has an upgrade of an upgrade of an upgrade.... that option will be disabled on the near future. So, this is the last chance to upgrade from an old version at fraction of the price.
Corel has already announced last year that one version will be released per year, and that is one of the reasons why now each release takes the year of release.
Actually if you have the last version 18, you are not paying a fraction of the price, it is 249.00 for the upgrade to 19 instead of the 100 from last year . I'm caught where I evidently should have paid the Canadian updates price last year in addition to the purchase so I could pay the Canadian update price this year. I had figured to just update every few years as it was for home use in my retirement - now they are dropping the cheaper upgrades it sucks. Not to mention 18 sounds superior to the current 19 on my current laptop as it doesn't crash after 1 print, which they say l9 does.

Not all people has the same issues. Only a few people say that having issues when print.
Sincerely; I don't believe the version 18 (CorelDRAW X8) was superior to CorelDRAW 2019, on the contrary, many people complained about it:
https://community.coreldraw.com/talk/coreldraw_graphics_suite_x8/f/coreldraw-x8/52357/coreldraw-x8-is-a-huge-disappointment
My personal feeling is that CorelDRAW X7 (version 17.0) works better than version 18, while version 20 (CorelDRAW 2018) still has a better performance than version 21 (CorelDRAW 2019).
version 2018 or X8?
