Got an email to purchase 2019 upgrade and it's also stating upgrades are ending??? Is it going the dreaded "subscription" (rent, never own) model?!
After reading the many bugs and problems with 2019, very reluctant to move on to that one. I'd hate to purchase that 2019 upgrade and they leave it to die and NEVER fix it, but force me to SUBSCRIPTION after they take my money.
CorelDRAW Upgrades are Ending!
Now is your last chance to upgrade to CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2019. Later this year, upgrades will no longer be available.
No. CorelDRAW will not be a subscription model only. Nobody will force you to subscribe. You can buy the next version (the box version) as always, and use it for a lifetime without paying anything extra.
The only thing that will end is the discount for previous versions. In the present, if you have, for example, X3, X4, X5, etc., you can buy CorelDRAW 2019 at half the price (approx.). This discount will not be available from the next version.
Lets be clear Ariel, i have a license for 2019. I will not be able to buy 2020 at the upgrade price UNLESS i take out 'upgrade protection' which is a membership fee. So Corel demand I pay NOW in order to benefit from the upgrade pricing for 2020. Payment in advance for a product of unknown quality.
OR I have to pay the full price.
Now lets put it this way. If this had been inforce from 2018, and people had paid in advance for the right to upgrade pricing for 2019, how happy do you think they would have been, right now? Not very is my estimate. 2019 is not ready for a production environment, and even though I have a license I revert to 2018 because it is an order of magnitude better. Even with its faults.

OK, let's imagine an user who have have a license for 2019. And let suppose that he want to upgrade every year.
Option 1 (current system) - he should pay 296 dollars next year. But he's not able to upgrade once again on 2021. Then, he should pay 600 dollars on 2021, and 296 dollars on 2022, and so on
Option 2 (new system) - he should pay 99 dollars next year. And 99 dollars on 2021. And so on
However, you presume that I will make my decision about upgrading in advance of the release. And on current and past experience the upgrade has been of dubious value, and most definitely this time round. The 'upgrade every year' assumption , by you and by Corel, is driving this model and its flawed. Corel have to
1. make upgrading seamless (which it most definitely isn't at the moment)2. Offer something of real value (which is debatable)3. Fix bugs that are well known in the current (and recent past) version, which they don't
i.e the software has to be tangibly better for people to make the decision to shell out the upgrade protection fee. And we can't make that judgement on anything other than historical experience, which fails on all 3 counts above, hence why I wouldn't give a fee to Corel on their promise to make 2020 better, because their promise to make 2019 better was untrue.
Ok I read further down the thread..after I posted my question.
If my understanding is correct, I just bought the 2019 CDR Suite UPGRADE (from 2017). IF I buy the $99 Upgrade protection when the next version comes out 2020 am I able to upgrade my 2019 for 2020 and pay $99?
Hi tihzo and others, we've been watching this thread very closely since my comment some time ago, and understand the frustration and confusion. First off, we will be releasing an FAQ very soon that will provide more details around the Upgrade SKU going away (I can already tell you that it will be December 1 of this year). Second, to your question above, what the Upgrade Protection means is that for an annual fee of $99/year (depending on region/currency) within 30 days of buying a full or upgrade perpetual version, when new versions come out within that one year of coverage, you will automatically be entitled to them at no additional fee beyond the $99 you would have already paid. So in this case, when 2020 comes out, a license would be provided at no additional cost to anyone who has purchased/renewed their Upgrade Protection within a year prior. As long as you pay the annual fee, then upgrades will be yours for no additional cost.
Thanks,
John
Thanks John!
So, to be really crystal clear, for my 2019 I recently bought, if I purchase the Upgrade Protection now for $99 that means when 2020 comes out I get the 2020 "upgrade" for no additional cost. Correct?
At that time I can pay $99 for the next version 2021 so when that comes out I can "upgrade" again for no additional cost, correct?
If all correct then if this "Upgrade Protection" was explained better I would have opted to buy it when I bought my 2019. Which leads to my next question.
I bought 2019 on 2019-05-27, so its already gone past the 30 days, does this mean I cannot now buy the "Upgrade protection"?
If because this is over 30 days since I bought my 2019, and I am not eligible for the $99 "Upgrade Protection", I take exception to this, as the Upgrade Protection Program was not adequately explained as to what it is at the time I bought 2019.
Thank you in advance for your help John.
Frank
EDIT: Changed 2020 to 2019 which is what I bought
I still have questions John, though your reply does clear up one question regarding the cost of upgrading. I thought the Upgrade Protection was in addition to the normal upgrade fee.
What if Corel are tardy in releasing the next version and it lands outside that one year window for which the $99 Upgrade Protection fee is applicable?
Since this is the first time I've seen the '30 day window' how will CDGS2020 potential purchasers be treated?. If the picture is only to become fully clear when the FAQ is released many people will have missed that deadline. Or is it the case that the new regime will only apply after the release of CDGS2020?
