Got an email to purchase 2019 upgrade and it's also stating upgrades are ending??? Is it going the dreaded "subscription" (rent, never own) model?!
After reading the many bugs and problems with 2019, very reluctant to move on to that one. I'd hate to purchase that 2019 upgrade and they leave it to die and NEVER fix it, but force me to SUBSCRIPTION after they take my money.

Hi everyone. I want to provide a bit more context. As everyone knows, we pride ourselves at Corel in offering choice for how to get CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. For some, that means subscribing. For others, that means buying a perpetual license. The only thing that is really changing later this year is the "open upgrade" whereby users of any previous version can buy the perpetual upgrade license of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2019. We will still provide the opportunity for current version owners to get into the latest version without having to subscribe or pay the Full version price. In the past we have changed the upgrade policy where only certain recent versions were eligible. Right now, the policy is wide open. But that is the only element that is changing later this year. As for Upgrade Protection, if you choose to go that route, it is valid for a period of one year from when you purchase it before it would need to be renewed to remain eligible for new versions as they come out. Hi John. I am still wading through all of these emails but I wanted to share with you my thoughts. I have been a CorelDraw/Photopaint user since the early 90s, with its very early versions. At the time I bought it for work related reasons. More recently I am also a user of Corel VideoStudio. In recent years I have upgraded Draw every few versions because I mainly use it for personal things and for flyers, ads, directories, etc. I do to help out at the church where I pastor. For my two cents, so Corel can understand, if my options are:
1. Upgrade every version or lose the upgrade option or,
2. Pay $99/year just for the insurance to upgrade at an upgrade price, and still have to pay the upgrade price over and above that,
I will, with tremendous sadness and costing me countless hours of migrating files, move to an OpenSource program. I can't justify that kind of money any more and I don't need the absolute latest version for the work I do. It would be very, very hard for me, after over 25 years, to say goodbye to Corel, but I will if these are my choices. Please pass that on if there is anyone you think should hear it.

Thank you, John. I am sorry for being slow in understanding, but I still have the same question as Cscotty (who replied to your reply to me). Are you saying:
1. If I pay $99/year then when a new version comes out I get it, or, are you saying,
2. If I pay $99/year I still have to pay to upgrade to it, I just don't have pay the full price?
If it is #1, then than is actually a much better deal than we currently have, where we have to pay to get each new version, just an upgrade price.
If it is #2, then that is my exact point and why I would, with great sadness, leave Corel---I would be, after having used Corel for over 25 years, having to pay $99 a year just for the "privilege" of being able to upgrade for an upgrade price, which I'd still have to pay.
Please clarify this for me and Cscotty. Again, sorry if it is clear to others and I'm just not getting it.

Sorry to labor this. So I'm on 2017. Do I have to upgrade to 2019 for $299 and join the upgrade program for $99, total nearly $400, almost the cost of a new seat?
That’s the catch. The program is $99 per year AFTER you pay $199 for the latest upgrade. So it’s really $298 up front to join, then $99 for each new release afterwards. Roughly $300 now and another $100 next April when version 2020 is released.

It seems to be some confusion. According with the Corel web:

If you pay $199 for the annual subscription, you don't need to pay anything more, nor the Protection Upgrade. When a new version is released, you can update without paying anything extra, only the $ 199 per year
The other option is for who buy the program. It is not mandatory, if you do not update every year you may not need it.
Let's do some calculations. If you buy the full version, the program costs $ 669. With the previous system, the following year you should pay $ 329 for the update. That adds up to a thousand dollars. Now they offer you upgrade for $ 99 instead of $ 329. That adds up to $ 768 instead of a thousand. Does it seem bad to you?
Suppose you buy this version, then update for two more versions (ie 2021/2022), in the previous system it would be $ 669 + $ 329 + $ 329 + $ 329 = $ 1656 (I don't know how many times you can update the program, but suppose you can buy it once and update indefinitely). With the new system, it would be $ 669 + $ 99 + 99 +99 = $ 966.
The other alternative is that you already have the program (for example, 2018). Hi Ariel, I am still running x7 quite happily and don't really have a problem upgrading to 2019 and then 2020 next year. But in the UK we are being asked to pay £300.00 to upgrade to 2019 and then £110.00 for the upgrade protection.. Which appears to be higher than the $ price?
As long as we retain a perpetual licence then I am happy with upgrade protection, although I am concerned about all the negative comments that are being made about 19. I ran a trial on 18 and that seemed fine. But if I have to pay £300+110 now and then another 110 in April that's £520. 2019 is currently £600 in the UK so it looks like I might just as well keep x7 and buy a new programme (x20) for £600 next year and start the upgrade protection then. X7 can be left on another machine as it is perfectly OK for some of the work we do unless Windows eventually breaks it!
The subscription method is also great and I am sure this will suit many people. We subscribe to Adobe and as we use several of the programmes regularly it quite good value, you just never own anything.
Here's hw i see it. If you're happy and PROFITABLE waiting a few years makes sence, it's a math thing. How much now? How much a year? How many years do you wait?
Can anyone advise how the dates on the upgrade protection work. Do you get 12 months from when you subscribe i.e. subscribe in August 18 and renew August 19. Maybe someone from Corel could detail it out as I can't find any clear answers anywhere, So on that bass I would get x19 now and as I have a valid upgrade subscription then I would also get x20 if it comes out before august.
Although John already said that only at the end of the year the details would be provided, the logic indicates that it is the same as the subscription, if you buy in August 2019 it is valid until August 2020. Usually each version comes out in the first months of the year, so that you will surely have CorelDRAW 2020.
That is what I would expect and that makes it more attractive for me as I would effectively get two upgrades within a year.
