Hi All,
Love Corel, but only know the basics I guess.
I have used a bevel effect on a company name for a banner (3m x 1m). When I publish it to .pdf the bevel effect is extremely pixilated. I have made the bitmaps (in .pdf settings) 600dpi to try and help, but this does nothing.
I can only use .pdf on our printer RIP....
please help!
Thanks in advance.
Options > Document > Page Size (or double click the page frame), there's a setting called Rendering Resolution.Bevels will be rendered, and so will transparencies and drop shadows, at the resolution specified here. You can also convert effects and other things that may cause problems to a bitmap (flatten) before sending to the RIP.Just don't forget to save a copy (on a separate page perhaps) before you flatten, in case you need to go back and edit.
For a banner that size, I guess around 100 dpi will be good enough (maybe even lower) but check that setting and come back to us.
Another thing: See if your RIP will accept Acrobat level 5.0 (version 1.4) or higher. These versions support some effects better (shouldn't be any difference with bevel though).
I use RasterLink myself and publish to PDF Acrobat 6.0, even though I don't think RasterLink officially supports it..
Hi Ronny,
Seeing as you use RasterLink I thought you may be able to help!
What are the best setting for .pdf's from Corel?
Ours are:
PDF version 5
output colour as CMYK
compression type: jpg
resolution for colour/greyscale/monochrome all 300dpi
compress text and line art & export all text as curves
Lately the feathered shadows etc have been printing as a blob or solid colour or the shadow looks like finger prints!, not how they appear in the .pdf.
This has only been happening the past few weeks? not sure if it a Windows issue or Corel?
We run windows 7 64bit, and have rasterlink pro v5 (2.5), printer is a Mimaki JV33
Have you been having any similar issues?
Thanks.

My normal PDF settings (the ones that matter) are:
Compatibility level: Acrobat 6.0Colors as: NativeNo embedded profileLZW compression and no downsamplingCompress text and line artExport all text as curves
Your settings seem to be in order.Acrobat 5 or 6 doesn't matter.Colors, CMYK or Native, a matter of taste and I prefer to make sure I have the correct colors already in Draw.Same thing about bitmap resolution, that's why I do not downsample on export. The only thing I suggest you change is the compression. JPG may give you smaller files, but there may also be visible artifacts in the print result due to the destructive compression algorithm.
Regarding the problems with shadow, I suggest you use flattening as mentioned in previous post. It's the best way to avoid problems with effects, and especially where several effects mix and interfere. Leave vectors as vectors where possible though.
And, as I also mentioned, try to decrease the resolution for bitmaps. Do some test prints. You may (most likely) not need even near what you think.300 dpi is overkill. I can almost bet you can't see any difference between 300 and 200, and 150 - 100 may very well be sufficient for most jobs and even lower for a drop shadow for example. Do some tests. Saves ripping time and disk space.
Thanks again,
Will give it a go.
