Hi All,
Love Corel, but only know the basics I guess.
I have used a bevel effect on a company name for a banner (3m x 1m). When I publish it to .pdf the bevel effect is extremely pixilated. I have made the bitmaps (in .pdf settings) 600dpi to try and help, but this does nothing.
I can only use .pdf on our printer RIP....
please help!
Thanks in advance.
Tim
I had a look at your file and even though I didn't have the same fonts installed I managed to get the same result you did.First time I Published to PDF, only part of the text was bevelled. Next time I got bevel on the entire text but it was heavily pixelated. My guess is that you exceed the 30,000 pixel limitation for the bitmap (which it will be when exported), and therefore there's an automatic downsampling, or as in my case, the bitmap will only be rendered partly.
Workaround: I mentioned in my previous post that flattening may be the way to go, and I suggest you try that. Not only in this case but also with other files where effects are involved. Sometimes the effects come into the RIP just fine, but you get much better control over the output if you convert the tricky parts to a bitmap prior to exporting.
Basically; convert all effects to one or a couple of CMYK bitmaps (maybe even to one big bitmap including the background), BUT leave text and vector objects on top of it AS VECTORS.
In this case (without having seen what the background looks like), convert the bevel to a, say 100 - 150 dpi, bitmap. You mentioned drop shadows and it is possibly a better idea to convert the bevel, the shadow and the background to one bitmap, and then leave the other stuff as vectors on top of it.Your banner is 3,050 mm, which equals 120", and you should be able to create a bitmap at nearly 250 dpi in that size, but it is not necessary. 150, or possibly even 100 dpi, will be more than enough.
As I also said; Don't forget to save a copy of the original before you start flattening.
And finally......you may try to change the rendering resolution like I mentioned at first. Use 100 dpi to keep it well below the 30,000 limitation. You may then have to recreate the bevel in order to make the new setting transfer to the bevel. Change some setting, like 7.0 mm to 6.9 mm, hit Apply and then back to 7.0 again. Then try to make a PDF again. Worked in my tests and the resulting bevel looked fine.
David Beczuk said:You cannot set the resolution of the page if its not in Pixels.
Edit: Thanks for mentioning this David.I just found out that there's an error in the Help file. It says that Rendering Resolution is available only when the unit is Pixels. This is wrong. Rendering Resolution in the Page Size dialog is always there, but the Resolution setting in the Rulers section is only there when the unit is Pixels.

1. Remove the bevel, break apart the text twice(first the words then each word) so that you have individual letters. Reapply bevel to each letter. Boo yaa, problem solved. This is 209% zoom on the decender of the 'g' that flat top is about 3" long and is great resolution. Give it a try.
2. Break text apart into two words. Use extrude, and then bevel, then 'show bevel only'
I can't attach it here, so go to this link, there is a corel x5 document and a PDF: https://www.yousendit.com/sharedFolder?phi_action=app/orchestrateSharedFolder&id=_6RnMb8p6E4m5nPEiuhk3Y5QHc46lhxi4UmvSr1so3c
as i said earlier.. this site is great!
simple thing like separating the letters worked!
thank you to all for helping and suggestions... much appreciated
... yes Mike "Boo Yaa"!
Hi Ronny,
Seeing as you use RasterLink I thought you may be able to help!
What are the best setting for .pdf's from Corel?
Ours are:
PDF version 5
output colour as CMYK
compression type: jpg
resolution for colour/greyscale/monochrome all 300dpi
compress text and line art & export all text as curves
Lately the feathered shadows etc have been printing as a blob or solid colour or the shadow looks like finger prints!, not how they appear in the .pdf.
This has only been happening the past few weeks? not sure if it a Windows issue or Corel?
We run windows 7 64bit, and have rasterlink pro v5 (2.5), printer is a Mimaki JV33
Have you been having any similar issues?
Thanks.
