When using Corel X5 I have had a lot of problems using linked images.
I have tried saving the suspect files (which is every one I work on) as X4 and opened it in X4 to test. All of the files output in a matter of minutes. If I then open the same file in X5 it hangs again. This leads me to believe that it is X5 that is causing the problem.
I am running Windows 7 on a 32 bit system with 3.00 Gb of Ram and a Tb hard drive.
Help
That needs to be checked out in depth and you need to zip all the files and put them on a server where they can be accessed. If you don't have access to a server then use Drop Box. You will need to keep it under 2GB to do that.
Yani
Thanks Yani, I will upload all files and will post the link when done.
Cheers, Darren
Something is wrong there. I don't link files normally as it creates confusion when archiving so I'm a bit vague.
It is claiming that the bitmap is not linked but there is not apparent way to relink the images. At the same time they are viewing as if they were linked but they are powerclipped. By the look of the Draw file size those images are within Draw.
Then I get 9 warning on PDF output for 2 linked images... what is that about.
I'd say that the linking system is BAD.

Get a copy of that from Jeff. I have a copy but it is for X4, it's been updated to X5. Sorry I can't test this and confirm that is does actually help. I do know from memory the macro is much closer to how Draw should work than Draw is.
IC if you click the link and hold and make a face at the computer then you can edit it. Nice, no tooltip just roll the dice.
I can't relink the eco logo it crashes the program every time. I can do this for the other image. Well I can relink it but it takes so long like 4 minutes that it appears the program has crashed.
Darren if you are working at this level that you should apply for the beta team in the next round. The best way to sort these issues out is before the product is released.
The PDF output is terrible. It's been in lock up mode for 10 minutes here. This is without question the saddest bit of code in Draw.
Darren I can't identify what is cause that problem.
If I create a new file there is no problem even using your bitmaps.
Saving as X5, removing powerclips, relinking images... nothing makes that file PDF is a normal amount of time.
This must be a file that was created in an earlier version of Draw? Which version?
Hi Yani, sorry for the delayed replies, I have been out of the office all arvo.
The file was initially created in X5 but I have saved as X4 then X5 in order to try and overcome the issues I have been having.
I am disappointed you are experiencing the same issues as I was hoping it was my system and not the software.
Well the file has picked up an error. When I copy your items to a new Draw page (different document) delete the bitmaps (as they can't be relinked once copied and broken) add the bitmaps then it PDFs just fine.
I haven't been able to make it fail from a clean file only from saves of your original file.
I thought it might have been the powerclips but I tried removing those on your file and it still fails.
I added powerclips to my new file and there work fine.
I assume this file you gave me was a cut down version of the problem file.
This is what I do when working in Draw...
I save as a new whole copy of the document about every 1-2 hours, version saves if you like.
I PDF about 3 times a day to check for errors.
What I found over the year that if you just keep working a document for 7 days and then go to output the file and it fails you have no hope of know when you introduced an error.
When you 'work safe' as above you wonder why you are bothering to work safe and nothing goes wrong (until you forget).
Errors can creep in from memory issues, disk issues, software issues... I've had years of lost work and just don't take risks.
One of the Corel lads might be able to see what has happened inside the file. It is something that Save As doesn't kill.
Thanks for all your help Yani. It was a clean file that I sent you but I must have transferred some corrupt data. I like your method of 'working safe' and will certainly adopt this for all future projects. Just can't afford to have corrupt data such as this.
Have a great day and thanks again.

That is exactly it. Been there too many times. 12 was the worst at creating big files that then wouldn't output as PDF.
If that was a clean file then make another doing the same process. You have SP2 in place? There might be something going on that needs a fix.
And I think you should get that macro off Jeff for the $20 from member it had a lot of features for updating the links.
I don't like the linking being based on absolute locations as it is in that dialogue nor the inability to update all links if you move the location of the bitmap folder. There is scope for Corel to improve this. I've been asking for years for Corel to make the linked file previews resolution settable.
If you can track down where the error is coming from I'll write a bug report.
Thanks Yani, I will do a bit of investigation and see if I can locate the source of the bug. Will let you know if I find anything.
So I put up with the issue of massive file sizes using linked images and along comes Corel X6.
Installed and same damn problem. I have just created a file, 32 pages with one externally linked image on each page. Guess what. The file is in excess of 956Mb.
Can anyone explain what is going on here? There is an obvious but that has been overlooked in the past 2 versions of Corel Draw.
