When using Corel X5 I have had a lot of problems using linked images.
I have tried saving the suspect files (which is every one I work on) as X4 and opened it in X4 to test. All of the files output in a matter of minutes. If I then open the same file in X5 it hangs again. This leads me to believe that it is X5 that is causing the problem.
I am running Windows 7 on a 32 bit system with 3.00 Gb of Ram and a Tb hard drive.
Help
That needs to be checked out in depth and you need to zip all the files and put them on a server where they can be accessed. If you don't have access to a server then use Drop Box. You will need to keep it under 2GB to do that.
Yani
Thanks Yani, I will upload all files and will post the link when done.
Cheers, Darren
Hi Yani, sorry for the delayed replies, I have been out of the office all arvo.
The file was initially created in X5 but I have saved as X4 then X5 in order to try and overcome the issues I have been having.
I am disappointed you are experiencing the same issues as I was hoping it was my system and not the software.
Well the file has picked up an error. When I copy your items to a new Draw page (different document) delete the bitmaps (as they can't be relinked once copied and broken) add the bitmaps then it PDFs just fine.
I haven't been able to make it fail from a clean file only from saves of your original file.
I thought it might have been the powerclips but I tried removing those on your file and it still fails.
I added powerclips to my new file and there work fine.
I assume this file you gave me was a cut down version of the problem file.
This is what I do when working in Draw...
I save as a new whole copy of the document about every 1-2 hours, version saves if you like.
I PDF about 3 times a day to check for errors.
What I found over the year that if you just keep working a document for 7 days and then go to output the file and it fails you have no hope of know when you introduced an error.
When you 'work safe' as above you wonder why you are bothering to work safe and nothing goes wrong (until you forget).
Errors can creep in from memory issues, disk issues, software issues... I've had years of lost work and just don't take risks.
One of the Corel lads might be able to see what has happened inside the file. It is something that Save As doesn't kill.
Thanks for all your help Yani. It was a clean file that I sent you but I must have transferred some corrupt data. I like your method of 'working safe' and will certainly adopt this for all future projects. Just can't afford to have corrupt data such as this.
Have a great day and thanks again.

That is exactly it. Been there too many times. 12 was the worst at creating big files that then wouldn't output as PDF.
If that was a clean file then make another doing the same process. You have SP2 in place? There might be something going on that needs a fix.
And I think you should get that macro off Jeff for the $20 from member it had a lot of features for updating the links.
I don't like the linking being based on absolute locations as it is in that dialogue nor the inability to update all links if you move the location of the bitmap folder. There is scope for Corel to improve this. I've been asking for years for Corel to make the linked file previews resolution settable.
If you can track down where the error is coming from I'll write a bug report.
Thanks Yani, I will do a bit of investigation and see if I can locate the source of the bug. Will let you know if I find anything.
So I put up with the issue of massive file sizes using linked images and along comes Corel X6.
Installed and same damn problem. I have just created a file, 32 pages with one externally linked image on each page. Guess what. The file is in excess of 956Mb.
Can anyone explain what is going on here? There is an obvious but that has been overlooked in the past 2 versions of Corel Draw.

Whoa!! I have noticed that X6 files are even more compressed than they were in X5.
Can you elaborate a bit on file details. Or may be a snapshot of Document properties dialog? Something must be horribly wrong I guess.
I am working on a book that has 212 pages (8" x 10") with 42 300dpi CMYK unlinked images and as you can see in attachment, the file size is about 73 MB.
Thanks for your reply. I will have to grab a screen shot later as I have just closed the file. Currently sitting at 1.234 gb
I have been experiencing this problem for quite some time, since x5 and have not been offered a solution by anyone.
All I can elaborate on is the following.
All images are 300dpi and are externally linked to the document
The document has 42 pages with one image on each page
There is not much else in the document other than a few bits of text
All linked files are located on a network drive (maybe this is the issue)
I am running Corel x6 on a windows 7 pc with 3tb of raid 5 storage.
This is crippling as the time it takes to work on any documents in Corel is creating a strain on our business.
Help, anyone.
I have been using X6 for a number of multipage files with up to 50 linked images in each and have found it to be remarkably reliable, file sizes around 10Mb. However I have found that X5 was very buggy in this regard, files created in v12 with linked files came in to X5 OK but when saved the linked bitmaps were not visible and they could not be made visible unless you reimported them. Those self same files opened in X6 still had the problem so I had to reimport them.
Since then X6 has worked very well for me. One thing you do need to be aware of is printing. Save the file rpior to printing and DO NOT save the file AFTER PRINTING as in order to render the bitmaps at full res Draw has imported each file again at full resolution, thats why a file gets bloated.
What I do is, with every image I import this way is to scale it as necessary, then Bitmaps>Update From Link before saving. Also Use the document Properties report (File>Document Properties) to find the files with the huge sizes. On X5 files use the Object manager to check each bitmap to see if it is visible
Thank you, all of he linked files are showing as less than 1mb in size in the document properties. I have not printed this yet so that can't be an issue.
Pone thing I have not mentioned, each page is to be a poster which is 1200mm x 1000mm. Can page size increase the file size even if images are linked?
